Led by yet another spectacular performance from three-time All-State point guard Miah Ostrowski, visiting Punahou ended 'Iolani's six-year run as Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion last night, 60-46, and won its first ILH title since 1999 before a capacity crowd of about 1,050.

The Buffanblu, ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, finished the regular season at 11-1, a game ahead of the No. 1-ranked Raiders (10-2).

Both teams have secured berths in the state tournament set for Feb. 20 to 23, but Punahou will also receive a first-round bye in the 12-team field.

Ostrowski, a 5-foot-9 senior, finished with a season-high 26 points to go along with seven assists, four steals and two rebounds. He scored 18 points and had five assists and all four of his steals in the second half, during which the Buffanblu stretched a 26-20 halftime lead to 41-24 with 1:33 remaining in the third period.

"It feels good, this was a tough game till the end," said Ostrowski, also a two-time All-State receiver who signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play football for the University of Hawai'i. "Even when we were up (by) 15, I knew they could still hit a couple 3s and get back in it. I was tired, but we just kept pushing."

Bricen McCartney's 3-pointer cut it to 52-43 with 2:01 left in the game, but Kameron Steinhoff's free throw 30 seconds later pushed the lead back to 10 and Ostrowski connected with Henry Cassiday on a perfect alley-oop play with 1:13 remaining to make it 55-43 and effectively seal the victory.

Steinhoff, a 6-5 forward, finished with 14 points and six rebounds, and 6-7 forward Spencer McLachlin — like Ostrowski a four-year letterman — added 11 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks and two steals.

McLachlin was held to seven points and five rebounds in the teams' previous meeting, a 74-63 'Iolani victory on Jan. 20.

"I knew their defense doesn't really allow a lot of points in the post, so I tried to score in other ways — off rebounds and hustle plays," McLachlin said.

He got eight of his rebounds in the fourth quarter, when the Raiders desperately tried to scratch their way back.

"They got almost every defensive rebound," 'Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said, "and when they were getting the boards, that would start their transition game, and we had a real hard time stopping them in transition."

As usual, Ostrowski was the main reason for that.

After the Raiders played Punahou even for most of the first half, Dalton Hilliard soared completely over a defender to score a layup with a minute left and Ostrowski followed with two more dazzling layups to give the Buffanblu a 26-20 lead heading into the locker room.

Ostrowski then scored on a pull-up, 12-foot baseline jumper and two more tricky layups to spark an 11-0 run midway through the third period to put Punahou up, 41-24. He opened the fourth period with a bank shot to make it 46-29.

"Miah stepped up and really did not want to be denied," Buffanblu coach Dan Hale said. "He was unbelievable."

Rykin Enos scored a game-high 16 points and the host Warriors erased a nine-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Spartans, 32-15, in the second half in an ILH game last night.

Kamehameha's Pono Hanson added 14 points and Mitchell Kauweloa 13. Ross Lum led Maryknoll with 14 points.
