Snorkeler pulled from ocean dies

A 28-year-old man died while snorkeling near Ko Olina Resort yesterday, police said.
The man was found face down in the water about 5 p.m. and brought to shore by other beachgoers, who attempted to revive him. There are no lifeguards in the area, according to Emergency Medical Services officials.
The victim was pronounced dead at Hawai'i Medical Center West.
NEAR DROWNING AT WAIKIKI HOTEL POOL
A 66-year-old woman nearly drowned yesterday afternoon at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider hotel swimming pool.
Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said the woman was not breathing when she was pulled from the pool about 3:53 p.m. Lifeguards from a nearby beach administered cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and the victim started breathing.
The woman was taken to the Straub Clinic & Hospital in critical condition.
WITNESSES SOUGHT AFTER SHOT FIRED
HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police are looking for witnesses who may have seen someone fire a shot into an elderly couple's Honoka'a home, nearly striking the two.
The couple reported the shot was fired into the Naupaka Street home and passed through their bedroom at about 1:30 a.m. Feb. 3. The two were not injured, police said.

THEBUS OFFERS PRO BOWL TRANSPORT
TheBus will offer a special Pro Bowl Football Express bus for today's game.
The express bus will take football fans in air-conditioned buses from various neighborhoods across O'ahu to Aloha Stadium and back after the game.
Cost is $3 each way, payable only by cash and exact change. Pickup begins from 9:30 a.m. at some locations. The buses will leave from various communities including Ala Moana Center, Downtown, Palolo, the University of Hawai'i, Waikiki, 'Ewa Beach, Kailua, Kapolei and Kane'ohe.
For the return trip, buses will leave the stadium when they are full, and the last return trip will leave a half-hour after the game ends.

CAR BOOSTER SEAT INSPECTION TODAY
Parents of young children can get their car booster seats inspected for free today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kapolei state building. Certified technicians will check to see if the booster seat is properly installed.
A new state law that took effect Jan. 1 requires children ages 4-7 and under 80 pounds to be restrained in a booster seat when riding in a vehicle.

SEARCH FOR MISSING MAN CALLED OFF
Fire officials last night called off a search for a man reported missing off Makapu'u Beach.
Police and fire officers searched for several hours for the man who had been reported missing about 5 p.m. by a caller to police.
The search may be resumed later if necessary, a Fire Department spokesman said.
