Sumner earns softball honor

East Carolina freshman left fielder Charina Sumner, a 2006 Kamehameha graduate, was named to the Carolina Classic all-tournament softball team after a 3-1 weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Sumner, who hit a home run in her collegiate debut, led the Pirates in runs with five while batting .417. She was second on the team in total bases with eight.
"Charina was an exceptional lead-off hitter for us," head coach Tracee Kee said in a release. "She did what we needed her to do, which was get on base, hit for power, hit for average and really just be that catalyst at the top of the lineup."
Freshman right fielder Kaui Tom (Kamehameha '06) and freshman third baseman Cristen Aona (Punahou '06) started all four games.
Tennessee sophomore shortstop Liane Horiuchi (Kamehameha '05 from Wahiawa) batted 1 for 2 with an RBI and stolen base in a 9-1 win over Penn State Saturday.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
UC Irvine junior Randall Tom (Seabury Hall '04 of Wailuku) was named the Big West Swimmer of the Week Feb. 6 after leading the Anteaters to victories over Cal State Northridge and UC Davis.
Against CS Northridge, Tom won the 200 freestyle in 1:43.01, and finished second in the 100 breaststroke (57.50). Against UC Davis, he broke the school record in the 400 individual medley in 3:55.03, good for second in the Big West this season.
He also won the 200 butterfly (1:48.32).
It is the first time this season, and fifth in his career, that Tom received the weekly honor.
TRACK AND FIELD
Brigham Young freshman Redmond Tutor (Kahuku '06) finished second in the triple jump at the TCR Race Productions Invitational at Albuquerque, N.M., over the weekend.
Tutor's jump was 47 feet, 8 inches. He was fifth in the long jump 22 1/4.
WOMEN'S GOLF
Saddleback Community College (Mission Viejo, Calif.) sophomore Sami Freitas (Redemption Academy of Kailua) was named to the Orange Empire Conference first team. She led the Gauchos with a 79 stroke average. Baseball
Brigham Young senior left fielder Apana Nakayama (Moloka'i '00) led off the third inning with a home run in a 5-2 win over Sam Houston State Saturday. BYU sophomore first baseman Kasey Ko (Punahou '05) was 1 for 3 with a run.
Navy senior third baseman Michael Garcia (Kalaheo '02) batted 7 for 13 with two doubles and two RBIs in a three-game sweep of Florida A&M over the weekend.
Central Arizona JC freshman outfielder C.J. Johnson ('Iolani '06) batted 6 for 14 with a double and two RBIs in games against Scottsdale and Phoenix over the weekend.
Cal Poly junior left-hander Marc Nobriga (Saint Louis '04) won his first Division I game in a 4-2 win against Nevada Friday in San Luis Obispo. He allowed a run, five hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
Puget Sound junior infielder/pitcher Shaun Kiriu (Punahou '04) batted 5 for 14 with four runs and three RBIs, and pitched three scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts in games against Corban and Pacific Lutheran over the weekend.
Concordia (Irvine, Calif.) senior infielder Keoni Ruth (Kamehameha '03) batted 4 for 8 with four runs and a steal in a sweep of Fresno Pacific over the weekend.
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Pepperdine senior outside hitter Jon Grobe ('Iolani '02 of Kane'ohe) had 14 kills and hit .500 in a 30-17, 30-18, 31-29 win over UC Santa Cruz Saturday.
Cal Baptist junior Corey Spence (Seabury Hall '03) was named the NAIA libero of the week Jan. 30. Cal Baptist defeated the second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-ranked teams that week.
COMMITMENTS
Three 'Iolani soccer players signed with Mainland programs, according to 'Iolani's Web site. Sammi Teramae signed with the University of Pacific, Kimberly Morse with Central Florida, and Nicole Ha with Loyola Marymount.
