After six weeks of events related to the topic of housing, The ARTS at Marks Garage, a project of the Hawai'i Arts Alliance, adds a written element to its multimedia exhibition "Shelter" with the Shelter Literary Festival tomorrow.
On hand will be Hawai'i author Lois-Ann Yamanaka, whose latest novel, "Behold the Many," has just come out in paperback. She and Melvin Spencer III, an assistant specialist in education at the University of Hawai'i, run the writing school Na'au: A Place for Learning.
Na'au held a writing contest on the theme of "home" for its young students. The judges, including Harry Wong of Kumu Kahua Theatre, writers Reina Whaitiri and Maile Meyer and Annie Moriyasu of Pacific Islanders in Communication, selected 12 winners (in four categories) who will read their work at the festival.
Visitors can try their hand at writing in a free workshop with poet and UH professor Caroline Sinavaiana.
