A small fire at Lincoln Elementary School in Makiki yesterday was intentionally set, fire officials said.

The 9:11 a.m. fire was confined to a storage building. It was extinguished by 9:20 a.m.

Students were evacuated as a precaution, and were allowed back in their classrooms after the fire was out. Fire officials estimated the damage at $300 to the building and $800 to its contents.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF CORRECTIONS NAMED

Gov. Linda Lingle has appointed Jean M. Ireton as deputy director of corrections for the Department of Public Safety. Ireton will work with Public Safety Director Iwalani White in overseeing the department's Corrections Division, which includes the state's four prisons and four community correctional facilities. She will start her new position March 7.

Ireton is currently division director of the Career Criminal Unit of the city prosecutor's office. She previously served as a deputy prosecuting attorney and has been a per diem judge with the District and Family Courts. Ireton was an associate with the Law Offices of Richard Turbin and also had her own private law practice.

WCC STUDENTS TO RALLY FOR LIBRARY

Windward Community College students will gather signatures at Hardware Hawaii Kailua today in support of a new library/learning center building for the Kane'ohe campus.

Gov. Linda Lingle released $2.6 million in design funding. Now the school needs construction money for the project and students want to foster community support to persuade legislators to fund the building this year.

LAHAINA MAN MAY WIN $10 MILLION PRIZE

LAHAINA, Maui — Lahaina resident Tony Partridge was notified yesterday that he is one of 210 people in America who could be getting a visit next week from the Publishers Clearing House Prize Patrol delivering an oversized check for $10 million.

Partridge was told that he already has won $1,000 and will learn Wednesday on the NBC Nightly News whether he is the big winner. He is the only Hawai'i resident in the running for the $10 million prize.

MAKAHA BRUSHFIRE SCORCHES 2 ACRES

At least eight fire engine companies and four tanker companies were sent to put out a 6:10 p.m. brushfire yesterday near Makaha Valley Road.

The fire burned more than two acres of land. People at the Makaha Resort Golf Club were evacuated but allowed to return about two hours later. There were no reports of injuries or property damage.
