A passerby chased down and captured a bank robbery suspect yesterday in Kapahulu.

Police arrested 33-year-old Ethan Levi Morgan, a felon with no permanent local address, on suspicion of first-degree robbery two minutes after the Bank of Hawaii branch at 727 Kapahulu Ave. was robbed at 11:38 a.m.

Police said a man who saw a commotion at the bank chased the suspect and captured him at Palinui Street and 4th Avenue at 11:40 a.m.

Morgan, who has had 23 prior misdemeanor and petty misdemeanor convictions since 2004, is being held at the main police station cellblock on two outstanding warrants, totaling $430, that are unrelated to the robbery. Morgan is expected to be turned over to federal authorities today if charged with bank robbery.

A teenager was critically injured in a collision yesterday between a moped and sport utility vehicle that closed Wai'alae Avenue to traffic in both directions between Koko Head and 13th avenues.

Police said the collision was reported at 6:50 p.m.

The boy operating the moped was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, said city Emergency Medical Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.
