Hawai'i teenager Moore outsurfs world champion

Punahou School freshman Carissa Moore upset world champion Layne Beachley of Australia in the first round of the Roxy Pro women's surfing contest Monday.
The first and second rounds were held in 2- to 4-foot waves at Snapper Rocks, Coolangatta, Australia.
Moore, 14, who is still an amateur competitor, had to win a separate trials event to earn a spot in the Roxy Pro.
"I think Snapper is the perfect wave, and it's my dream come true just to be here," Moore said. "It's not that big of a deal that I won, I just had fun surfing against Layne."
As a first-round winner, Moore received a bye in the second round. She will have to face Beachley again in the one-on-one third round.
Among the other Hawai'i surfers, Megan Abubo and Melanie Bartels also advanced to the third round, but Rochelle Ballard was eliminated in the second round.
BASEBALL
HPU SWEEPS PATTEN
David Chow pitched a five-hitter with eight strikeouts as Hawai'i Pacific beat Patten University, 5-1, last night to complete a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
Colton Silva had three hits and an RBI as the Sea Warriors improved to 3-6. The Lions, from Oakland, Calif., fell to 5-12.
In the opener, Paul Nishimura hit a grand slam, Johnny Gentry had three hits and three RBIs, and reliever Aaron Kent earned the victory with four innings of no-hit, no-run pitching for HPU.
On Monday, Jason Shimizu pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and HPU scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and final inning to pull out a 3-2 win.
Nishimura hit a one-out RBI triple and Michael Kealoha followed with an RBI double to cap HPU's seventh-inning rally.
In Monday's opener, David Lievanos hit a two-run single and two-run double in Patten's 11-7 victory.
Kealoha had four hits, and Andrew Sramek and Danny Lee each drove in three runs, with two of Lee's RBIs coming on a third-inning home run, to lead HPU.
WATER POLO
UH EDGES MICHIGAN
Lisa van Raalte scored with 14 seconds to play as No. 4 University of Hawai'i edged No. 16 Michigan, 16-15, yesterday in a non-conference women's match at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Van Raalte and Kelly Mason each scored four goals and Anna Sieprath added three for the Rainbow Wahine (9-7).
Shana Welch led the Wolverines (10-8) with seven goals.
Hawai'i squandered a 14-11 lead in the fourth period, falling behind 15-14 before Mason scored with 1:02 remaining to tie the score.
Later, van Raalte got a feed inside from Kristy Bagnall and lobbed the ball over the goal-keeper for the go-ahead score.
GOLF
GAMMIE LEADS UH
Hawai'i's Dale Gammie shot a final-round 1-over-par 73 yesterday to finish in a three-way tie for third in the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational at Fresno, Calif.
Gammie shot 4-over 148. Long Beach State's Kay Hoey won with 146, followed by Colorado's Lindsay Caljouw with 147.
Fresno State finished first in the five-team field with 596, followed by UC Irvine (598) and Hawai'i (605).
VOLLEYBALL
KAMANA'O HAS CLINICS
Kanoe Kamana'o, a former University of Hawai'i All-America setter, will conduct Competitive Sports Training Volleyball Clinics on March 11 and 18 at Farrington High School.
The March 11 clinic is open to boys and girls ages 10 to 12 from 3 p.m. to 6. The March 18 is open to boys and girls 13 to 15 from 3 p.m. to 6.
Fee is $60 and the clinics are limited to the first 100 players. Deadline is Monday.
