Punahou girls basketball tourney starts today

The Seventh Annual Punahou Wahine Spring Basketball Classic kicks off today with six games at Hemmeter Field House.
The 12-team tournament, featuring two-time defending state champion Punahou and defending Division II state champ Kalani plus 2006 DI runner-up Roosevelt, continues through Saturday in its "Challenge" round-robin format.

PUNAHOU NO. 41 IN BASEBALL AMERICA POLL
Three-time defending state champion Punahou is ranked No. 41 in Baseball America's preseason Top 50.
The Buffanblu, who went 24-6 overall last season, are ranked immediately behind Moeller (Cincinnati) and immediately ahead of Cartersville (Ga.).
Moeller is Ken Griffey, Jr.'s alma mater.
Seton Hall Prep (West Orange, N.J.) is ranked No. 1.
HAWAI'I BOWLERS OFF TO NATIONAL TOURNEY
Reigning Hawai'i High School Athletic Association bowling state champion Rich Kodama of Hawai'i Baptist and Cara Michelle Smith of Sacred Hearts have been selected to participate in the inaugural Denny's All-American High School Championships set for March 24 and 25 at Grand Rapids, Mich.
Th event will be held in conjunction with the Denny's PBA World Championship.
Kodama and Smith are two of 29 seniors selected to participate based on bowling accomplishments, academics and other criteria.
The 29 seniors (15 girls and 14 boys) include at least one representative from every state that has high school bowling except Iowa and New Mexico.
ESPN will broadcast the finals April 22.
CORRECTION
Kamehameha's Amber Waracka was named to the Interscholastic League of Honolulu softball all-star first team. Her name was omitted from yesterday's list.
