Surf up to 30 feet expected today

Surf is expected to build to as high as 30 feet today along O'ahu's North Shore and 20 feet on west shores, prompting a high-surf warning by the National Weather Service for those areas.
Waves along the east and south shores, meanwhile, will roll in at up to six feet today. The swell is expected to slowly subside tomorrow, with the next swell arriving Saturday and peaking Sunday.

HMSA GIVING FREE FLU SHOTS
The Hawai'i Medical Service Association will offer free flu shots to its members Saturday at the HMSA Center on Ke'eaumoku Street.
The shots will be given from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members must show an HMSA card and photo identification to get a free flu shot. Nonmembers must pay $35 for the immunization, while supplies last.
LAW PROFESSOR PUBLISHES BOOK
A University of Hawai'i law professor has published an 800-page desk reference on intellectual property and software licensing.
Danielle Conway-Jones, director of the Hawai'i Procurement Institute at the UH-Manoa Richardson School of Law, co-authored "Intellectual Property, Software and Information Licensing: Law and Practice."

Conway-Jones recently was awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award to lecture and conduct research at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia.
COLLEGE AWARDS 112 SCHOLARSHIPS
The University of Hawai'i- Manoa Shidler College of Business has awarded 112 scholarships for the upcoming academic year.
The scholarships total more than $200,000 and are funded by alumni, faculty and friends of the college. They are awarded based on academic achievement, financial need, area of study concentration and community service.

BIG ISLAND
MAN, 80, POSSIBLE DROWNING VICTIM
An 80-year-old man apparently drowned yesterday while snorkeling off the Paniau coastline, Big Island firefighters said.
The man was spotted in the water about 11:10 a.m., and swimmers pulled him to shore and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Firefighters were called to the scene about 11:41 a.m. and pronounced the man dead.
Police were investigating the incident last night and did not release the victim's name.
DRIVER KILLED IN ONE-CAR CRASH
A fiery one-car crash late yesterday killed one person, Big Island police said.
The driver of the vehicle was found dead at the scene, and police last night had not been able to determine the victim's gender.
Police said the accident occurred at about 10:20 p.m., when a 1993 Saturn four-door sedan went out of control while traveling west on Palm Parkway, ran off the left side of the road and burst into flames.
The victim was taken to the Kona Community Hospital and pronounced dead.
Police were investigating whether alcohol or speed were factors in the crash. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call Officer Sharlotte Bird at 326-4646, extension 229.

STATE PARKS ON MEETING'S AGENDA
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will hold a public meeting at 5 p.m. Monday at the Kaua'i War Memorial Convention Hall to discuss its draft master plan for Koke'e and Waimea Canyon state parks.
The plan for the parks stresses preservation and upgrades of educational programs and recreational sites.
"These parks are important and treasured recreational areas for the people of Kaua'i," said DLNR chairman Peter Young.
