TASTE
Toast 2007 with 007's smoother martini

The 007 mystique is soaked with martinis the way an olive is soaked with ... well, vodka. But instead of the vodka martini that most fans associate with James Bond, the latest film, "Casino Royale," with its new Bond, Daniel Craig, takes us back to the original book and James' original drink.

He orders it during a crucial scene at the casino:

"Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet, shake it over ice then add a thin slice of lemon peel," he tells the bartender.

Gordon's is the gin, of course, but Kina Lillet is now called Lillet Blanc, and reportedly is made with less quinine than it once was, giving it less bitterness — which in the film Bond also ascribes to his female interest and double agent, Vesper Lynd.

With the new film and new Bond being praised as the best yet, what better time to toast original? (And although Bond preferred his martini shaken, most bartenders will tell you stirred is better so the drink will not become cloudy. You decide.)

Bond calls for Gordon's in this drink, but you can use any London dry gin. Tasters found this cocktail smoother than a typical dry martini.

VESPER MARTINI

  • 3 ounces London dry gin

  • 1 ounce vodka

  • 1/2 ounce Lillet Blanc

  • 1 piece lemon peel

Pour gin, vodka and Lillet into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Stir until the shaker becomes cold. Strain into a martini glass. Drop in lemon peel.
