"HALEIWA: A PICTORIAL HISTORY" BY TOM JACOBS, WITH PHOTOS BY BILL ROMERHAUS; PAU PONO PUBLICATIONS, HARD COVER, $17.95

If you love O'ahu's Surf Town, and wonder what it looked like in the past, this book is a must-have. In side-by-side photos (vintage and new, often of the same location) and short essays, Jacobs and Romerhaus tell Hale'iwa's story, from when it was a village in Waialua Moku to its traffic-clogged, surf- and tourist-driven present. Essays cover significant structures and natural features past and present. The story of the magnificent, lamented Hale'iwa Hotel is particularly interesting.
