The ninth class of Pacific Century Fellows, a program modeled after the White House Fellows Program to identify, encourage and develop future Island leaders, was founded by former White House Fellow, Mayor Mufi Hannemann. The appointees are chosen on the basis of education; career; special achievements; community involvement; communication skills; and strength of character. The program nurtures interaction with senior community, social and government leaders, especially to develop solutions to state and national challenges. The 2007 fellows are Sananda "Sandy" Baz, executive director, Maui Economic Opportunity, Inc.; William Marcus Bowers II, senior watch officer, Command Operations, U.S. Marine Corps, Marine Forces Pacific; Roderick L. Boyce, environmental health officer, U. S. Navy; Kristie K. Cruz Chang, deputy attorney general, State Attorney General's Office; Katy Y. Chen, executive director, PATCH (People Attentive to Children); Christopher Deuchar, founder/president, U.S. Pacific Development LLC; Dawn Matsuyama Dunbar, assistant vice president/corporate communications manager, American Savings Bank; Anthony D. Gaston, director of engineering and site construction, Castle & Cooke Homes Hawaii, Inc.; Asai Gilman, executive director/president, Education-1st Hawaii Inc.; Avelino "A.J." Halagao, manager/legal consultant, Westlaw Hawaii/Pacific Rim; Keith K. HayashI, associate/engineer, Herbert Chock & Associates, Inc; Ross A. Kaneko, project manager, CH2M Hill; Norman Wayne Karo, chief operations officer, Pipeline Communications and Technology Inc.; Ken C. Lee, 43, partner, Accuity LLP; John T. Leong, partner/owner, Pono Pacific LLC; Kari S. Leong, co-founder, New Distinction Corp. (Greater Good Radio), and teacher, Ka'ahumanu Elementary School; Dr. Jennifer Jose Lo, physician/satellite clinic chief, Straub Clinic and Hospital; Meredith Low, retail sales manager, The Honolulu Advertiser; Dennis C. McElrath, president/owner, FOPCO Inc.; Collin Miyamoto, vice president, Avalon Development Co.; Brian Schatz, chief executive officer, Helping Hands Hawaii; James Takamine, assistant vice president, marketing manager-Hawai'i Island, American Savings Bank; Kevin H. Takamori, associate vice president-alumni relations, University of Hawai'i Foundation; Yvonne Yim, director of administrative services, Hospice Hawaii; Tara M. Young, senior asset manager, The Kamehameha Schools; and Darcie A. Yukimura, director of communications, St. Louis School.
A new board of directors has been elected for Our Lady of Kea'au, a religious-centered facility that provides outreach services for the homeless and disadvantaged. The Wai'anae Coast center, which was dedicated in Oct., 2005, also serves as a place of prayer, refuge and recreation for organizations and community business meetings, retreats and celebrations. Sister Agnelle Ching, chief executive officer of St. Francis Healthcare System, has been named chair, and Sister Beatrice Tom, chief administrator of Our Lady of Kea'au, has been elected president of the board. Sister Patricia Rapozo, educator at St. Michael's School and Parish, has been voted secretary/treasurer. Elected for two-year terms were Dennis Miyashiro, branch manager of First Hawaiian Bank's Wai'anae Branch; and retired Lt. Col. Don Arakaki, JROTC senior army instructor at Wai'anae High School. Elected to three-year terms were Sister Norise Kaiser, mission educator at St. Francis Healthcare System; Kay Kramer, an 'Ewa Beach community volunteer who previously served on the boards of St. Francis Medical Center-West and St. Francis Healthcare Foundation; and Suzanne Leonida, a Wai'anae community volunteer. St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii is comprised of St. Francis Medical Center, St. Francis Medical Center-West, St. Francis Community Health Services, St. Francis Healthcare Foundation, St. Francis Healthcare Enterprises, St. Francis Residential Care Community, and Our Lady of Kea'au.
The Hawai'i Credit Union League has hired Sherrie Fitch as education and meeting coordination officer, and GAYLE LAU as league regulatory officer. Fitch formerly worked with the Walt Disney Co., and Lau is retired from the U.S. Department of Justice as assistant U.S. trustee for Hawai'i, handling administration of bankruptcy cases.
