The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team was defeated for the second night in a row against host UC Irvine, which was extremely accurate in a 30-20, 30-22, 30-27 victory last night.

The match lasted 1 hour and 25 minutes with UCI fans chanting, "warm up the bus" in the final moments of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match.

UC Irvine's Matt Webber, a left-hander with a Mohawk, finished with 15 kills. Jayson Jablonsky added 12 kills and three aces.

The No. 1 Anteaters (6-0, 2-0) hit .306 in the first game and .484 in the second.

"We got off to a really nice start, we played some really smooth volleyball and ball-controlled so well tonight," said UC Irvine coach John Speraw.

Jim Clar, who started for the Warriors (0-2, 0-2) in place of Steven Grgas, had 11 kills. Lauri Hakala and Matt Vanzant posted 10 kills apiece.

Eric Kalima made the switch from hitter to libero for Ric Cervantes in Game 2 in efforts to beef up the passing.

Hawai'i hit .170 and committed 12 service errors with zero aces. The Anteaters had six aces. Hawai'i was out-blocked 11.5 to 8.5

"I think Irvine played much better tonight and they're steadier than we are right now," said Warriors coach Mike Wilton. "We make it close for two-thirds of the game, then they get a little separation and we break down a little bit."

UC Irvine had zero receiving errors.

"We passed the ball at such a high level that it was difficult for anyone to score points on us," Speraw said.

On Friday, UC Irvine won, 30-28, 30-26, 30-21.

Hawai'i, which has been plagued by the flu recently, will return home to play Pacific on Jan. 18 and 19.

"We have a lot of new young guys out on the floor, I'll tell you I think we're gonna be a nice team," said Wilton. "Hats off to Irvine, they're the team to beat right now probably."

Clar said: "We know what we have to do, it's just doing it. We don't have as much experience playing with each other."
