Sparklers bundled together and lit at Campbell High School yesterday caused an explosion that brought the police bomb squad and SWAT team to the campus to investigate, education officials said.

The event occurred about 12:20 p.m. outside the school's building G, police and Department of Education spokesman Greg Knudsen said.

No one was injured.

Neither the Fire Department nor the city's Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene.

After the initial alarm, Knudsen said that it wasn't much.

"It was sparklers bundled together and lit. Not really an explosion, although the police dispatcher referred to it as a bomb," Knudsen said.

An investigation by the school continues.

90-YEAR-OLD MAN 'NUDGED' BY CAR

A 90-year-old man fell after he said he was "slightly nudged" by a car yesterday morning while trying to cross Liliha Street, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city's Emergency Medical Services division.

The man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in stable condition after he struck the back of his head near the H-1 Freeway's Liliha on-ramp shortly after 9:30 a.m.

Thursday morning Honolulu recorded its fifth pedestrian fatality of the year when a 78-year-old woman was struck and killed in 'Aiea.

KAPA'A MAN, 21, CHARGED IN ATTACK

LIHU'E, Kauai'i — A 21-year-old Kapa'a man has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer in connection with an incident Jan. 7 in which he allegedly threw a flammable compound believed to be gasoline onto police officer Chris Gandeza and then tried to light it.

Gandeza was treated for exposure to a chemical.

Authorities responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a home at Kapa'a Family Project. When they arrived, police said, they found Payton Rapozo, who was brandishing two knives and the liquid he threw on Gandeza. Police said he threatened to kill Gandeza.

Rapozo is in custody, charged with attempted murder, criminal property damage, terroristic threatening and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.

RESCUERS RECOVER HIKER'S BODY

HILO, Hawai'i — The body of a 59-year-old hiker was recovered yesterday morning after the man fell off a 100-foot cliff while he was lost in the dark in 'Opihikao in Lower Puna.

Police said the man and a 46-year-old woman were hiking near some steam vents Thursday evening when they became lost in the forest.

The Orange County, Calif., woman told authorities she heard a splash, and then her companion stopped responding to her calls.

The woman waited until morning, and then walked to Highway 130 near the 15-mile marker outside of Pahoa to summon help.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 7:14 a.m. yesterday, and the woman was able to guide them to the site of the fall. Rescuers used ropes to descend to the base of the cliff to remove the man's body, fire officials said.

An autopsy has been scheduled, and the identity of the man was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
