No. 3 'Iolani runs, guns down No. 1 Punahou, 74-63
By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer
'Iolani basketball coach Mark Mugiishi had been searching for more offense recently, and decided to implement a more run-'n-gun style last night against Punahou.
Problem solved.
'Iolani effectively speeded up the game, had four players in double figures and hit seven 3-pointers in a 74-63 victory over host Punahou in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game.
'Iolani, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, No. 1 Punahou and No. 2 Saint Louis are tied for first at 5-1.
"Punahou plays such good and aggressive defense, if you try and slow the game down it plays into their hands because you're back on your heels all the time," 'Iolani coach Mugiishi said. "We just tried to attack them as best we could and fortunately today we made good decisions and made our shots."
'Iolani, which was averaging 53.6 points per game, ran at every opportunity, penetrated effectively and applied back-court pressure.
"It feels great because a lot of people have been doubting 'Iolani basketball from the beginning of the season," Liloa Nobriga said. "It feels good to knock off the No. 1 team. It shows everybody what we can do."
'Iolani led 47-34 with 5:30 left in the third period, but Punahou went on a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to get within two.
Punahou was within 62-60 with 3:05 remaining in the game, but 'Iolani finished with a 12-3 spurt, including a couple of layups after breaking the Buffanblu full-court press.
"We're maturing as a team," Mugiishi said. "We've made a lot of bad decisions in previous games. Today most of our decisions were pretty good."
Case Miyahira scored 19 points, Nobriga and Ryan Dung added 17 apiece, and Taylor Mounts had 12 for 'Iolani.
Miyahira made four 3-pointers, Dung hit two and Bricen McCartney had one. The Raiders shot 39 percent (7 of 18) from behind the arc.
"We were shooting a lot of 3-pointers, but what helped us in this game is we scored in other ways," Mugiishi said. "We scored in transition and scored inside and that allowed us to be multi-dimensional."
The Raiders committed only six turnovers while playing at the quicker tempo. They forced nine turnovers.
"That's been a key for us all season, taking care of the ball," Dung said.
'Iolani made 24 of 51 field-goal attempts, and was 19 of 27 from the free throw line.
Miah Ostrowski scored 19 points, and Dalton Hillard and reserve Kimo Makaula each added 11 for the Buffanblu, who were 23 of 60 from the field. Punahou's Spencer McLachlin, a 6-foot-7 forward, was limited to only seven points.
"They did a great job on Spencer and on me; taking away my baseline drives and doubling him down," Ostrowski said. "We have to watch films and find a way to execute against that defense."
