Taxi driver's condition probed

Honolulu police vehicular homicide investigators yesterday said a medical condition may have contributed to a cab driver passing out before his taxi van veered off Kalakaua Avenue and crashed into a bus stop, killing 73-year-old Kikue "Rika" Rosenberg on Jan 7.
The 52-year-old cab driver was treated for injuries at The Queen's Medical Center and released. The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed.

WITNESSES SOUGHT TO 2-CAR ACCIDENT
Police are seeking witnesses to a two-car motor vehicle collision yesterday on the H-1 Freeway near the Likelike overpass in which a 30-year-old man was injured.
The man was driving a Toyota sedan in the far right eastbound lane at 12:44 p.m. when he was cut off by a dark-colored car that caused him to loose control of his car and swerve to the left, police said. The man's Toyota was broadsided by a 2006 pickup truck.
The man was at The Queen's Medical Center in fair and stable condition, police said. The driver of the truck was not injured.
The driver of the dark-colored car did not stop and is wanted by police for questioning about leaving the scene of an accident. Anyone with information is asked to call officer Mark Tom of the Traffic Division at 529-3145.
FUGITIVE SEIZED IN MAKIKI AREA
Kalihi Crime Reduction Unit police officers arrested fugitive Tilton Lasua Jr. Monday in a Makiki-area apartment after receiving a tip on his whereabouts.
Lasua was wanted by police for violating a stay-away order on Jan. 11, when he allegedly tried to force his former girlfriend out of her parked car in Kalihi and then rammed the vehicle 13 times during a pursuit after she drove away. The ramming caused the woman's car to hit a parked vehicle and utility pole on Kalihi Street.
Lasua was charged with attempted murder and other counts.

CAR THEFT LEADS TO MULTIPLE COUNTS
A 20-year-old man who caused minor injuries to a police officer when he sped off Jan. 10 after being stopped in Waikiki in a stolen car was charged yesterday for three auto thefts, first-degree criminal property damage, first-degree terroristic threatening and first-degree assault.
Christian Kainoa "Kai" Kudlich, who has no permanent local address, was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
According to a police report filed at District Court, Kudlich was driving a 2000 Toyota Corolla stolen Jan. 6 in Kailua when he was stopped in Waikiki for having a scraped-off safety sticker.
During the stop, police determined the car was stolen. Kudlich refused several orders by police to turn off the engine and allegedly drove off as an officer reached for the ignition. The officer suffered leg, hip and shoulder injuries. Kudlich was arrested Sunday.
ARBORISTS TO HOLD O'AHU CONVENTION
More than 1,000 arborists from around the world are expected to gather in Hawai'i this summer for an international conference.
The 83rd annual conference and trade show of the International Society for Arboriculture will be held July 28 to Aug. 1 at the Sheraton Waikiki.
The event each year brings together commercial, municipal, utility and research arborists to discuss ways of taking care of trees and making use of their benefits, organizers said.

STATE OF JUDICIARY ADDRESS IS TODAY
Chief Justice Ronald Moon of the Hawai'i Supreme Court will deliver his State of the Judiciary address to state lawmakers today.
Moon will give his speech at 10 a.m. in the Senate chamber of the state Capitol.
The address will be broadcast live on 'Olelo channel 49 and posted at www.courts.state.hi.us.

KEKUNI BLAISDELL WILL BE HONORED
Dr. Kekuni Blaisdell, emeritus professor and the first chairman of the Department of Medicine at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, is being honored through the creation of an endowment in his name.
The inaugural Blaisdell lectureship today and conference tomorrow and Friday is themed "Healing and Wellness: Bridging Western and Traditional Healing Practices." Today's lecture is at 5 p.m. The conference is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All events will be held at the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa's Ocean Room 1.
