Murakami sparks Mililani victory

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

At 5 feet 4, Mililani junior Curtis Murakami easily was the smallest player on the court for most of Saturday night's O'ahu Interscholastic Association showdown at Radford.

But he made one of the biggest differences in the Trojans' 70-52 stunning comeback victory, which clinched at least a tie for the OIA Red Conference Western Division championship. Mililani, ranked No. 5 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 10-0 in the West with two regular season games remaining.

The Trojans can clinch the title and the West's No. 1 seed for the upcoming league playoffs with a victory at Campbell (8-2) on Wednesday.

"Coach (Hiram Akina) said nobody usually goes undefeated in the West, so if we want to do it we have to step up our game," said Murakami, who contributed with 15 points, two rebounds, a steal and an assist off the bench to spark Saturday's comeback. "Last time, Radford took us to double-overtime at our house, so he said let's see what we could do at their house."

Radford (7-3) appeared headed for payback by finishing the first period with a 7-0 run and pushing its lead to as much as 47-37 with 1:56 remaining in the third quarter. But Murakami then drained a 3-pointer, a free throw and a driving layup to cut it to 47-43 in the next 60 seconds.

Brandon Dela Cruz's layup made it 47-45 just before the period ended, then Kendrick Clarke started the fourth quarter with a putback to tie the score 47-47. On Mililani's next possession, Murakami missed a layup but was fouled and a Rams player was assessed a technical foul.

Murakami sank three of the four free throws, and Dela Cruz (19 points, seven rebounds, two steals, one assist) followed with another layup to complete a shocking three-minute, 15-0 run.

"We try to tell our kids to keep their composure, but we lost it there," Radford coach Kai Enos said. "Murakami did a good job, and so did their other players like Dela Cruz."

After Matt Hoover's 3-pointer cut it to 52-50 with 6:36 left, the Trojans went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes. So'oso'o Taulelei's reverse layup cut it to 61-52 with 2:47 remaining, but that would be the Rams' final points of the game.
