A free University of Hawai'i-Manoa Centennial Celebration event, the Sakamaki Lecture Series, continues in July.

On Wednesday, Stuart Scott gives a talk on "The Climate Crisis."

On July 18, there will be a screening of the film "The First Battle," followed by a Q-and-A session with the film's producer, Tom Coffman.

Both programs take place at 7 p.m. in the Yukiyoshi Room, Krauss Hall 012 on the Manoa campus. Seating is first come, first served.

'THE CLIMATE CRISIS'

Stuart Scott's presentation summarizes the evidence for global warming, establishes the reality of the human ecological footprint as a major causal factor, and delves into individual and collective solutions to this challenge to humanity.

Scott, a graduate of Columbia University and the University of Florida, is an educator, environmentalist and longtime Honolulu resident.

He teaches college mathematics, statistics and critical thinking, and markets solar energy solutions here.

Scott has joined The Climate Project as a presenter of Al Gore's "Climate Crisis" slide presentation, which is the subject of the critically acclaimed documentary film "An Inconvenient Truth."

Scott recently launched his own ClimateCorps to provide resources for restoring balance to the earth.

'THE FIRST BATTLE'

"The First Battle," a 57-minute film, chronicles the formation and actions of the Council for Inter-racial Unity that was organized in Honolulu in 1939 in support of Hawai'i's large population of Japanese and Japanese-Americans.

Where 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry were removed from their West Coast homes and interned, a behind-the-scenes battle for justice and equality — reaching as far as the White House — set Hawai'i on a different course.

"The First Battle" portrays people working together under extreme stress against daunting odds.
