Man charged in Waialua stabbing

Prosecutors yesterday charged a 45-year-old man in connection with the beating and stabbing of a man who was left to die in Waialua June 22.

Thomas Lee Manijo was charged with second-degree attempted murder. He has an initial appearance scheduled today at District Court.

Manijo is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

The victim, 32, was found by a man walking his dogs at 6:30 a.m. and is recovering from his injuries at The Queen's Medical Center. Police said the victim could have bled to death if one of the dogs hadn't led his master to him.

Manijo on Monday was arrested along with another man, 48, based on information developed by the Wahiawa Crime Reduction Unit and homicide investigators.

The second man was released pending further investigation.



3-YEAR-OLD GIRL HIT BY CAR IN HAU'ULA

A 3-year-old girl who struck by an automobile on Kamehameha Highway near Hau'ula Beach Park at about 4:20 p.m. yesterday was later flown by helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for Honolulu Emergency Services. Additional information on the accident was not available last night.



PAHALA MAN'S BODY RECOVERED

Big Island firefighters on Tuesday recovered the body of a 37-year-old Pahala man from waters off Whittington Beach Park in Ka'u.

Police identified the man as Leo Norberte Jr. Norberte was found at 10:45 p.m. about 150 yards off shore in 10 to 12 feet of water. Norberte was pronounced dead at Ka'u Hospital.

An autopsy is pending.



OLOWALU FIRE NOW UNDER CONTROL

Maui fire officials yesterday declared a large brushfire at Olowalu under control at 1:50 p.m., while a brush fire in Lahaina that started Tuesday was declared 90 percent contained.

Maui County spokeswoman Mahina Martin said firefighters have completed mop-up operations at Olowalu. The fire started eight days ago and burned an estimated 2,600 acres. No one was injured.
