For a bit of nightlife glamour, the Society of Seven Las Vegas — the spinoff combo in residence at the Main Showroom of the Outrigger Waikiki hotel — has discovered that all you need is Love.
Anna Marie Love, that is.
The seven-member guy band, specializing in pop and Broadway musical favorites, has taken on a softer edge in recent months, with the addition of a gal who joins in on the fun and games.
The addition of a female singer follows the lead of the namesake classic group Society of Seven, which is now based, confusingly enough, in Las Vegas. (Here's how it works: The Socity of Seven originally had the Waikiki spotlight, but the group has been at the Flamingo hotel in Las Vegas for two, going on three, seasons. SOS will be back for a two-night stand July 13-14 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.)
The original group added Philippines songstress Lani Misalucha, and the transformation of that act has been remarkable.
The same is happening in Waikiki, in a work in progress that continues to be tweaked.
With the Waikiki-based Society of Seven Las Vegas, Love is not so much an impressionist as Misalucha. But no matter.
She's a team player, has just as much joy as her guy pals in making raucous music every night, and she brings a new spirit and gloss to the ranks.
The guys have been pretty stable, with a lineup that includes Glenn Miyashiro, Jonathan Kaina, Richard Natto, Freddy Von Paraz, John Salvatera, Mike De Guzman and William Daquioag.
They still play a myriad of instruments, including trumpet, flugelhorn, keyboards, drums, guitar, saxophone, bass and congas. And they do a wild collection of impersonations, mostly in medleys. In this respect, they're also like the Society of Seven.
But the Society of Seven Las Vegas now has someone to play off.
Love pokes fun at Britney Spears on "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," and has been integrated into the patriotic red-white-and-blue "God Bless the U.S.A."
She is one of the boys in the Village People lineup, and has a couple of vocal solos during a set.
The guys carry the brunt of the impersonations, doing Rat Packers Sinatra and Davis, rockers and soulsters as diverse as Joe Cocker and Tom Jones, and, of course, icons such as Elvis, complete with audience participation. If you've seen an SOS outing, here or in Vegas, you know the drill.
There's some surprisingly effective and outrageous work here, from Von Paraz as Mick Jagger, staggering through "Satisfaction" and "Jumping Jack Flash."
There's power and pomp, when Miyashiro and Love embrace "Razzle Dazzle," from "Chicago"; and when Kaina cuts to the chase on "This Is the Moment" from "Jekyll & Hyde," with verses shared by Natto and Miyashiro.
Society of Seven Las Vegas — which founder-creator Tony Ruivivar now defines as "Society of Seven Latest Version" — has established a following. Happily, the spinoff troupe has followed the lead of an accomplished outfit, with a resident songbird to add new life to the act.
