Man, 60, missing offshore blowhole

Advertiser Staff

Rescuers spent more than eight hours searching for a missing fisherman yesterday near Hanauma Bay, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The man, 60, is described as being 5 feet 7, weighing 135 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

He reportedly fell into the water from an area called Bamboo Ridge, near the blowhole next to Hanauma Bay.

The man was reported missing to the Honolulu Police Department at 8:20 a.m. The Honolulu Fire Department yesterday morning requested Coast Guard assistance to search for the missing man.

An HH-65 Dolphin helicopter and crew from Barbers Point and two rescue boats and crews searched along the coast from Makapu'u Point to Hanauma Bay and offshore five miles. Fire department crews, including a rescue boat, divers and the department's Air One, searched along the shoreline.

The Coast Guard Cutter Galveston Island, based on Maui, began searching at 7:30 last night. The Coast Guard was expected to search through the night with the 110-foot cutter and a helicopter and crew.

Anyone who has information tied to the search should contact the Coast Guard, 842-2600.
