Hilo's Lyman Museum was recently awarded accreditation for the fourth time by the American Association of Museums, one of fewer than 25 American museums to have achieved this distinction. The award means that the Lyman Museum operates according to the profession's best practices and highest standards, and fulfills its obligations to the public, as stated in its mission.

Dr. Doris Ching, former vice president for student affairs, recently received the Ellingson-Bitner Award from the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Campus Center board. The award is given to outstanding individuals who have advocated for student growth.
She was the first woman vice president of the university. Her career highlights include initiatives such as campus childcare, the Women's Center, Service Learning Center, new student orientation program, systemwide Student Caucus, Regents and Presidential Scholars program, Bridge-to-Hope and many others.

The Council of the American Meteorological Society has announced the election of Eileen Shea, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Integrated Data and Environmental Applications Center in Honolulu, as a Fellow of the Society. A small percentage of the member are approved as fellows each year.
As deputy director of NOAA's Climate and Global Change Program, she was instrumental in its evolving from a $9 million initiative to an $80 million research program. She helped create the Pacific Climate Information System, a framework for U.S. climate observations, research, forecasting, assessment, education and information management services in the Pacific.
Correction: Dr. Doris Ching was former vice president for student affairs at the University of Hawai'i. The position she held was inaccurately reported in a previous version of this column.
