When people look back at the 2007 girls basketball state tournament, they will remember not only Konawaena's championship victory but also one of the greatest individual performances in Hawai'i history by Honoka'a's Keisha Kanekoa.
Keisha already had been recognized across the Islands as a two-time Advertiser All-State first-team selection after leading the Dragons to state semifinal appearances as a sophomore and junior.
But this year, the 5-foot-6 point guard had a spectacular 31-point, nine-rebound, three-assist, two-steal and one-block performance in the state quarterfinals to lead the Dragons to a stunning upset of No. 1 seed Roosevelt.
The very next night, Keisha topped that with one even more amazing: 32 points, 11 rebounds, four steals, two assists and one block in a semifinal loss to two-time defending champion Punahou.
Keisha then capped her brilliant four-year career in the third-place game against 'Iolani by scoring 26 points, dishing out seven assists, grabbing six rebounds and having a hand in all of Honoka'a's fourth-quarter points, including the game-winning jumper with seven seconds remaining in a 49-48 victory.
Hawai'i will get to see more of Keisha, who is bound for the University of Hawai'i on a basketball scholarship.
In addition to being one of Hawai'i's greatest basketball players, Keisha will be remembered at Honoka'a for her humble leadership as both a student and athlete.
