Spencer McLachlin is not only one of the state’s best, he is one of the nation’s best.
That is what Volleyball Magazine called the Buffanblu standout, who recently was named National Player of the Year in its latest issue.
Spencer was a two-time Advertiser State Player of the Year in volleyball and helped Punahou win three straight state championships with dominant performances in the biggest matches.
In his final high school match, he had 15 kills and no errors in 23 attempts (for a .652 hitting percentage) and added nine digs to lead Punahou to a sweep of Kamehameha-Hawai‘i and its third straight undefeated season.
In basketball, Spencer was a four-year varsity letterman and three-year starter. He was named ILH Co-Player of the Year last season and was selected to The Advertiser’s All-State first team, helping the Buffanblu win their first league title since 1999 and advance to their first state championship game since that same year.
Even in the heat of battle, Spencer displayed the highest levels of sportsmanship and never failed to give credit to teammates and opponents alike.
He will attend Stanford University on a full scholarship and plans to major in education.
