In the 10-year history of the Hawai‘i high school girls wrestling state tournament, only one wrestler had won four individual championships.

Kamehameha’s Hoku Nohara joined that extremely exclusive club this season, capping her brilliant career with a 4-3 victory in the state title match.

She won her third championship as a junior despite a knee injury suffered earlier in the season.

Hoku also was a two-time ILH all-star first-team third baseman/designated hitter and one of the state’s most feared sluggers in softball, which is played during the same season as wrestling.

And in judo, she was a three-time ILH champion and two-time state champion.

Ironically, Hoku’s most impressive athletic feats were not even accomplished in Hawai‘i. She has set 13 world records in powerlifting, including an amazing bench press of 352 pounds last September and an all-age dead lift record of 407 pounds in 2004.

Hoku will now take her talents to the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, where she has accepted a scholarship offer to play softball and study health and physical education.
