Dominant football and basketball players usually do not come in 5-foot-9, 160-pound frames.
But Punahou’s Miah Ostrowski proved that sometimes the best gifts truly do come in small packages.
Miah did not waste time making a name for himself in Hawai‘i high school athletics, becoming only the second boys basketball player to be named to The Advertiser’s All-State first team as a freshman.
He repeated as an All-State first-teamer every year since, capping his career by helping the Buffanblu win their first ILH championship since 1999 and snap ‘Iolani’s six-year stranglehold on the crown.
In the title-clinching victory over the Raiders, Miah put on one of the most spectacular performances in recent ILH history, scoring 26 points to go along with seven assists, four steals and two rebounds.
His electrifying ball-handling and dazzling array of drives to the basket thrilled crowds and earned the praise of Maryland’s Montrose Christian Academy, which was ranked No. 14 in the country at the time, when he scored 14 points and had three assists in leading Punahou to a near-upset in a preseason tournament.
In football, Miah was a two-time Advertiser All-State first-team selection and three-time ILH all-star first-team receiver. His speed and elusiveness also was displayed in kick and punt returns, and he was the focal point of many defenses trying to figure out a way to stop him.
Miah will take his many talents to the University of Hawai‘i, which has offered him a football scholarship and also will give him a chance to make the basketball team.
