GOING VEGAS
Second Cannery slated at Palace

By Anthony Curtis

Ground has been broken at Nevada Palace east of the Strip for the $250 million Eastside Cannery on Boulder Highway. When completed, the hotel-casino will have 307 rooms, a 65,000-square-foot casino, a bingo hall, and a spa. The Nevada Palace casino and 100 rooms will remain open during construction, but will be torn down before the new Cannery opens. A motel wing has already been razed to make way for the new property, which is scheduled to open late next summer. The original Cannery is on the far north side of Las Vegas and has been one of the city's most successful local casinos since it opened in 2003.

Monorail deal: The Las Vegas Monorail is offering a promotional summer fare on its one-day pass. Formerly $15, the new summer rate has been cut to $8. The monorail has been experimenting with pricing to increase what continues to be a lag in ridership.

Bellagio display: Lazy days cruising Route 66 is the theme of the new summer display at the Bellagio conservatory. The centerpiece is a colorful country fair featuring sunflowers, tent tops, and a 42-foot Ferris wheel, plus a 1962 Corvette convertible on loan from the National Corvette Museum. The display is free to view.

Planned for Planet: As part of its changeover from the Aladdin, Planet Hollywood has announced a pending restaurant roster including Earl of Sandwich, Koi (Japanese), Strip House (steak), Alfredo's (Italian), Yolo's (Mexican), and Pink's Sports Lounge, which will serve the famous Pink's hot dogs from Los Angeles. Most eateries are to debut "in the summer."
