Maui film fest opens Wednesday with lots to see

The Maui Film Festival begins Wednesday with its always-ambitious features and shorts from around the world, filmmakers panels, parties and more in various indoor and outdoor venues.
Among the films:
"Evan Almighty," due for national release June 22, will be screened at 8 p.m. June 17. It stars Steve Carell ("The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and TV's "The Office") in a sequel of sorts to the Jim Carrey comedy "Bruce Almighty." This time, Evan becomes a modern-day Noah, directed by God (Morgan Freeman) to build an ark. Rated PG, 100 minutes.
"La Vie en Rose," 10 p.m. June 15. A critically acclaimed homage to the legendary French chanteuse Edith Piaf, played by Marion Cotillard. PG-13, 140 minutes.
"Penelope," 10 p.m. June 17. Christina Ricci stars in a romantic fable. She's a wealthy young woman whose inheritance includes a family curse — a pig's snout instead of a nose — that only love can dispel. PG, 101 minutes.
"Charlie Bartlett," 8 p.m. Thursday. This comedy, which made a big splash at the Tribeca Film Festival, stars Anton Yelchin as a rich kid who enters public school and finds success in unexpected ways. R, 97 minutes.
The Islands are well-represented in films, including "Heart of a Soul Surfer: The Bethany Hamilton Documentary"; "Ha-wai'i: Message in the Waves"; "Hawaiian Waterfall Prayer"; and "Na Kamalei: The Men of Hula."
Global and environmental themes are explored in a variety of features, including "Everything's Cool," about global warming; "Future by Design"; "Revolution Green"; and "Transforming Energy."

Most screenings are $10 advance, $12 at the door; half price for kids 10 and younger for G- and PG-rated films at the Celestial Cinema, Maui SkyDome and Castle Theater. Free for kids at the "Evan Almighty" and "Penelope" screenings.
