Residents of Kahului, Wailuku and Spreckelsville should expect an increase in aircraft traffic starting tonight because of airfield maintenance work on the main runway at Kahului Airport, the state Department of Transportation said.

Runway 02/20 will be closed nightly from 12:30 to 8:30 a.m. tomorrow through Saturday and again June 19 through June 23. Newly resurfaced sections of the runway will be regrooved to provide aircraft greater traction during takeoffs and landings.

Rerouting flights to runway 05/23 will result in more air traffic over those communities, the DOT said.
