Accident leads to N. Shore outage

A vehicle struck a utility pole on Kamehameha Highway in the North Shore area last night, knocking out power to 907 Hawaiian Electric Co. customers in the area of Sunset Beach to Kuilima Access Road.
HECO spokesman Darren Pai said troubleshooters were on scene assessing the damage. The outage occurred at 9:08 p.m.
Police closed the highway to traffic between Velzyland and Crawford's Convalescent Home due to live wires on the roadway. No one was critically injured, police said.
MOTORCYCLE CRASH VICTIM IDENTIFIED
The Honolulu medical examiner's office yesterday identified a motorcyclist who died after a collision late Saturday night as John Ligsay, 67, of Wahiawa.
Police vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. Alan Vegas said the victim had been driving a 2004 Harley-Davidson on Wilikina Drive, which collided with another motorcycle at 10:39 p.m. just west of Lake View Circle.
Ligsay was thrown from his motorcycle and may have been struck by the second motorcycle, a 2002 Harley-Davidson driven by a 63-year-old 'Ewa Beach man, Vegas said.
Ligsay was taken in critical condition to Wahiawa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m.
The 'Ewa Beach man was treated for minor injuries and released.
Speed apparently was a factor, and neither man wore a helmet, Vegas said. Ligsay's death was O'ahu's 36th traffic fatality this year, compared with 44 by this day in 2006.
AUTOPSY PLANNED FOR PEARL CITY MAN
The medical examiner's office is awaiting confirmation of the identity of a 57-year-old Pearl City man who died at The Queen's Medical Center after crashing his van into a chain-link fence on Forrest Avenue, about 130 feet south of Ala Moana, at 9:44 a.m. Friday.
Witnesses told police the man may have suffered a medical condition, said vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. Danny Kaholokula. An autopsy will be performed tomorrow.
TEEN STABBED AT SHOPPING CENTER
A 17-year-old boy was stabbed yesterday afternoon at Windward Shopping Center in Kane'ohe.
The youth was taken to The Queen's Medical Center about 4:30 p.m. in serious condition, said Honolulu Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.
'A'ALA PARK QUARREL ENDS IN STABBING
A 55-year-old man was arrested yesterday for questioning about a stabbing at 'A'ala Park.
The male victim suffered a puncture wound in the left rib cage area and was taken to The Queen's Medical Center after being driven to an area near Mayor Wright Homes. The incident was reported to police about 3:30 p.m. Police said two men were reportedly involved in an argument that escalated into violence.
MAN CHARGED WITH ROBBING 2 TEENS
An 18-year-old Kane'ohe man was charged Saturday with robbing two 14-year-old boys Thursday in Chinatown near 'A'ala Park.
Jordan Kaleikaumaka White is accused of using physical force in taking money from the boys. White was arrested at North Kukui and River streets at 3:35 p.m. Thursday.
He was being held in lieu of $20,000 bail.
MAN ARRESTED IN BLEACHER THEFTS
Police yesterday arrested a 42-year-old Aliamanu man on suspicion of stealing and cutting up aluminum bleachers from Le Jardin Academy in Kailua.
The man was booked for second-degree theft at 7:55 a.m. and released pending further investigation at 11:10 a.m. A groundskeeper reportedly called police after spotting the man carrying away sawed-off pieces of the bleachers. The man was arrested in the 900 block of Kalaniana'ole Highway.
WAI'ANAE SHOOTING SUSPECTS ARRESTED
Two men were arrested yesterday in front of an Alohiki Street home in Wai'anae on suspicion of first-degree assault in connection with an early-morning shooting at nearby Pilila'au Park.
Police said a 24-year-old man was shot in the stomach about 4:30 a.m. by a gunman in a Lincoln Navigator. The wounded man drove himself to the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Heath Center and was later taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he was reported in guarded condition.
According to police, the two men arrested were involved in an argument with another group of men at the park, at 85-166 Plantation Road.
The suspected gunman, 21, allegedly fired several shots into the air on two occasions during the argument, police said. The opposing group responded by throwing bottles at the sport utility vehicle. The gunman allegedly stood on its running board and fired at the group from about 60 feet away, with one shot wounding the victim.
The SUV was driven away but was found about 5 a.m. Police arrested a 25-year-old man, whom they said was driving the Navigator with the suspected gunman inside.
YOUTH ARRESTED IN BRUSHFIRE PROBE
A minor was arrested on suspicion of second-degree arson Friday in connection with a May 27 brushfire at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
The boy was one of two youths seen by witnesses in an area where the 3:11 p.m. brushfire started. The youth turned himself in to police, who questioned him and released him to his parents. The investigation is expected to yield more arrests, police said.
ARSON SUSPECTED IN KALIHI BLAZE
Police have opened an arson investigation into a fire that damaged a public-housing apartment unit Saturday in Kalihi.
A suspect fled the scene of the 8:22 a.m. fire at 802 Waiakamilo Road and was still at large.
A witness told police the tenants of the unit were involved in an argument before the fire started. A man was seen fleeing, police said.
Investigators determined a propane torch was used to ignite bedding in the master bedroom, police said. The unit is part of a a state Public Housing Authority project.
Fire Department spokesman Capt. Earle Kealoha said damage was estimated at $10,000 to the building and $3,000 to the apartment's contents.
TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO WOMAN'S ARREST
A woman who failed to return from a three-hour furlough to a court-ordered residential program on Dec. 15 was arrested Friday in Chinatown .
Sherilyn Tracy Young, 44, now faces a second-degree escape charge. Young was arrested at 12:35 a.m. after a traffic stop.
