CORVALLIS, Ore. — Joey Wong's RBI single with two outs in the top of the ninth inning spoiled Zach Putnam's bid for a no-hitter and led defending national champion Oregon State to a 1-0 victory over Michigan in the opening game of their super regional yesterday.
Wong hit a soft liner on a 1-2 pitch from Putnam into left field to score pinch-runner Braden Wells from second base as the throw to the plate from Michigan's Derek VanBuskirk was late.
Putnam (8-5) struck out eight and walked three, leaving after Wong's hit. He didn't allow an Oregon State baserunner until Scott Santschi's one-out walk in the sixth.
The Beavers (43-18) need one more win over the Wolverines (42-18) to reach the College World Series for the third straight year.
Santschi walked to open the ninth, and Wells entered as a pinch runner. Lonnie Lechelt's sacrifice sent Wells to second, and Chris Hopkins struck out to bring up Wong.
Joe Paterson (10-6) pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief for the win, while Eddie Kunz got two outs for his 11th save.
UC Irvine 3, Wichita St. 2: Matt Morris hit a one-out single off Anthony Capra (7-1) in the bottom of the ninth inning and scored on Bryan Peterson's double to right field as UC Irvine (45-15-1) completed a two-game sweep of the Shockers (53-22) at Wichita, Kan., to reach the College World Series for the first time in school history.
Louisville 20, Oklahoma State 2: Isaiah Howes hit a grand slam and drove in six runs as the Cardinals (46-22) pounded out 21 hits in routing the Cowboys (42-21) in the best-of-three series at Louisville, Ky., to earn their first trip to the College World Series.
North Carolina 9, South Carolina 4: Chad Flack's tiebreaking two-run shot in the seventh off reliever Will Atwood snapped a 4-4 tie against the Gamecocks (46-20) and sent the Tar Heels (53-13) to the College World Series. Flack — whose two-run game-ending homer in last season's super regional at Alabama gave the Tar Heels their first CWS berth since 1989 — came through with another key shot at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
South Carolina forced the winner-take-all finale earlier in the day by holding off the Tar Heels' comeback bid. In that game, which was suspended Saturday night because of lightning and heavy rain, the Gamecocks nearly blew a six-run lead but used Justin Smoak's 22nd homer and a key two-run double by Phil Disher to stay alive.
Arizona St. 7, Mississippi 1: Josh Satow (13-3) scattered five hits and walked five in 7 2/3 scoreless innings, and Brett Wallace homered and drove in three runs as the Sun Devils (48-13) advanced to the College World Series for the second time in three years by completing a two-game sweep of the Rebels (40-25) at Tempe, Ariz.
Cal St.-Fullerton 2, UCLA 1: Clark Hardman had three hits and three Cal State Fullerton pitchers held UCLA (33-28) to one run as the Titans (38-23) swept the Bruins to advance to the College World Series for the 15th time in school history. Matt Wallach's one-out RBI single in the seventh inning gave Fullerton a 2-1 lead. Fullerton has won the national title four times (1979, 1984, 1995 and 2004).
