The T.G.I. Friday's restaurant in Waikiki served its final meals last night, less than two weeks after the only other Friday's franchise in Hawai'i shut its doors.

The closure of the Kuhio Avenue restaurant came as suddenly as the June 11 shutdown of the Ward Avenue restaurant. T.G.I. Friday's in Waikiki served its final meals last night and was set to close after the last call at the restaurant's bar at 2 a.m.

Wesco Restaurant Group of Hawai'i owns the local Friday's franchises. Carlson Restaurants Worldwide of Minnesota owns the T.G.I. Friday's brand.

No specific reason was given for the closure of the two restaurants, although Wesco's president, Joe Khoury, said it was based on financial and personal reasons.

"Although it was a very difficult decision, based on challenging economic times and personal difficulties, we recently closed the Honolulu T.G.I. Friday's restaurant," Khoury said in a statement from his Los Angeles office. "It is with sadness that I also announce that we will be closing the Waikiki T.G.I. Friday's as of the end of business today. The first T.G.I. Friday's opened in Hawai'i 26 years ago and we want to thank our guests and the best team members in the restaurant business for their ongoing support."

Carlson Restaurants Worldwide spokeswoman Amy Freshwater suggested that a T.G.I. Friday's might return to Honolulu.

"Both Honolulu and Waikiki are very important markets for us," Freshwater said. "While it's premature to determine when Friday's will be back in these markets, I can tell you that it is our intention to be back on the island. We will be looking to establish a new relationship with a franchise interested in developing the Hawai'i market."

Freshwater did not comment on the company's plan to open restaurants on Maui and Kaua'i. Last month, Carlson Restaurants announced that it was hoping to open 60 new restaurants overall in the next three years, including franchises on those islands.
