Surfer Patacchia advances in Chile
Advertiser Staff
Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore won his second-round heat in the Rip Curl Pro Search contest yesterday.
Ten heats of the second round were run in 8- to 10-foot waves at Arica, Chile. The competition was postponed after Patacchia's heat because winds started blowing onshore.
Patacchia defeated Australia's Dayyan Neve, 11.4-10.0.
He is the fifth Hawai'i surfer to advance to the third round. The others are Andy Irons, Bruce Irons, Pancho Sullivan and Kekoa Bacalso.
The contest is the fourth of 10 stops on the 2007 World Championship Tour.

$25,000 FOR UH
A recent gathering of the legendary "Fabulous Five" University of Hawai'i basketball team of the early 1970s netted $25,000 for the UH men's program, according to the school's Web site.
UH head coach Bob Nash was a member of the team, which became the first from UH to play in the National Invitation Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.
The event — "A Toast to the Coach" — took place Thursday at The Plaza Club in downtown Honolulu and was sponsored by Dwight Holiday, a former Fabulous Five member, and the Partnership Ministry.
Also in attendance were fellow Fab Five members Al Davis, John Penebacker and Jerome Freeman along with their coach Red Rocha.
The former teammates and coach were reunited to produce a documentary about their remarkable seasons. The Fab Five teams of 1970-71 and 1971-72 amassed a 47-8 record. The documentary is being produced by OC16 and scheduled to be released in November.
At the end of the event, Holiday presented Nash with a $5,000 check, which was matched by four other donors.
