Tennis great Smith to give clinic at CORP

Advertiser Staff

Stan Smith, one of the most popular and successful tennis players ever, is here for a free clinic tomorrow at Central O'ahu Regional Park's tennis facility.

The event begins at 1 p.m. with registration and a racquet diagnostic. The Prince "Speed Challenge" goes from 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. It will focus on ground strokes, volleys, overheads and serves. Smith will run a doubles strategy exhibition from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. The next hour will be "interactive doubles play" with Smith as coach. He will be available for pictures and autographs from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The first 100 to register receive a gift from Prince.

Smith won 39 singles titles in his career, including victories at the 1971 U.S. Open and 1972 Wimbledon. He was ranked No. 1 in the world both those years. He represented the U.S. for 10 years in Davis Cup, helping the Americans win seven times. Smith also captured 61 doubles titles, most with Bob Lutz.

His game lives on even in "retirement." Smith was the 35-older Wimbledon champion in 1984 and '85, and the 55-older U.S. Open champ in 2002 and '04. He also coached the 2000 Olympic team and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1986.

Smith was Director of Coaching for USTA Player Development from 1986 to '94.

VOLLEYBALL

HAILI EVENT CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY

The 50th anniversary of the Haili Men's Volleyball Tournament will take place this month in Hilo. The tournament is open to male and female players of all skill levels.

The tournament began as an extension of Christian fellowship through sports. From its start in 1958 with 12 teams, and games played at the historic Haili Gym, the tournament has grown to be one of the premier volleyball events in Hawai'i and the United States. There are four levels in the adult division, which plays March 28 to 31, and four levels in the junior division, March 26 to 28.

For the 50th anniversary, the field will include more than 180 teams with representatives from the Big Island, O'ahu, the Mainland, Guam and Japan.

Most of the volleyball matches will be at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. Because of the large number of teams, matches will also be at the UH-Hilo, Keaukaha, Waiakea, Hilo Armory and Andrews gyms.

Admission is free.

This year, the tournament will honor Bill Kaaa, coach of the first Haili winner.
