A Hilo grand jury indicted a Waikoloa man yesterday for second-degree murder in the shooting of another man in a resort parking lot, with the indictment alleging the killing was committed in an especially heinous, depraved or cruel manner.
If convicted, 53-year-old Lito A. Mateo could face life in prison without the possibility of parole. The grand jury also indicted Mateo for use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Tito Rafol, 38, also of Waikoloa, was slain in the employees' parking lot at the Kings' Shops at the Waikoloa Beach resort shortly before 4:07 p.m. March 8.
Judge Glenn Hara set Mateo's bail at $1 million.
