Police seek Likelike Highway carjackers

By Peter Boylan
Advertiser Staff Writer

Police are looking for a man and woman who faked a car breakdown on Likelike Highway yesterday, then stole the car of a couple who stopped to help.

The 18-year-old man and his girlfriend were robbed at gunpoint and left on the side of the road, on the Kane'ohe side of the Wilson Tunnel, at 3:15 a.m.

Police said the couple were traveling toward Kane'ohe in a silver Honda Accord when they saw a woman and man standing next to a car with its hood up on the side of the road.

The 18-year-old man pulled over, got out of his car and asked the woman if she needed help. After a brief conversation, the woman closed the hood of the "stranded" car — a black Honda Prelude — got in and drove off.

The woman's male accomplice pulled up his shirt to reveal a gun tucked in his waistband. He took out the gun, pointed it at the driver and told him to surrender his car. The victim's girlfriend got out of the car as the man turned over his keys to the gunman, who got into the Accord and drove off.

The car was found abandoned later yesterday 30 feet down a ravine of Aoloa Road in Maunawili. Detectives examined the car yesterday and recovered blood and hair evidence to be tested for DNA.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call police at 911 or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.
