U.S. senators Daniel K. Inouye and Daniel Akaka announced March 13 that two federal health and human services grants totaling nearly $10.3 million have been awarded for Hawai'i projects.

One grant, for $8,718,073 from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, is for the state-sponsored Hawaii Demonstration to Maintain Independence and Employment project. The project provides preventative medical treatment to diabetic adults.

The other grant, for $1,549,135, is for Kuakini Medical Center's study of brain aging in the very old.

Hawaiian Electric Co. has awarded a $10,000 grant to Hawaii Literacy in support of its Classroom on Wheels, a traveling library and classroom that operates on the Wai'anae Coast, providing residents of all ages with free access to books, educational materials and literacy services.

The Mary D. & Walter F. Frear Eleemosynary Trust has awarded a $500,000 grant to the Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded a $637,366 grant to the Salvation Army. The money will help provide transitional housing for homeless women recovering from alcohol and drug addiction, and for their children.

Also received from HUD was $870,273 by Mental Health Kokua for its Safe Haven Project. Safe Haven seeks to engage, house and support the mentally ill who are living on the streets.

The Tobacco Prevention and Control Trust Fund of Hawai'i Community Foundation has paid for three of the American Lung Association of Hawai'i's statewide programs. Recipients are: $525,000 to the Word of Mouth youth tobacco prevention program; $525,000 to the Adult Cessation of Tobacco program; and $385,142 to Not-On-Tobacco, a smoking cessation program for youth.

The Hawai'i Hotel Industry Foundation has awarded $2,895 to the American Lung Association of Hawai'i for the Open Airways for Schools program.

Sam's Club-Pearl City has awarded $1,000 to the American Lung Association of Hawaii for the Asthma Sports Day Camp on O'ahu.

Kunia Wal-Mart has awarded $5,000 to the American Lung Association of Hawaii for the Asthma Sports Day Camp on O'ahu.

Stanford Carr Development Fund has awarded $25,000 to Narconon Hawai'i to pay for drug education programs for children.
