Bradley sweeps Hilo in baseball doubleheader

Advertiser Staff

Dan Brewer homered to lead off the top of the ninth inning, boosting Bradley to a 7-6 victory over host Hawai'i-Hilo and a sweep of a non-conference baseball doubleheader yesterday at Simmons' Field in Kailua, Kona.

Brewer and Ryan Eigsti each had two RBIs, Colby Luttrell had three hits and Paul Rice pitched out of trouble in the bottom of the ninth for the Braves (7-7).

Rice entered with one out and David Chu on second by way of a hit by pitch and sacrifice. Rice got Robby Mowers to line out to left and, following a wild pitch that advanced Chu to third, induced Ryan Taiariol to pop up for the final out.

Taiariol hit a two-run single to lead the Vulcans (5-25).

In the first game, Brewer drove in four runs and Rice contributed three RBIs to lead Bradley to a 19-10 victory.

Michael Higa had four RBIs, and Mowers and A.J. Satele added three hits apiece for Hilo.

HPU MAKES IT 3 IN ROW

Spencer Omalza had four hits and three RBIs as Hawai'i Pacific defeated Southern Connecticut State, 10-4, yesterday in a non-conference baseball game at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Danny Lee hit a solo homer, Johnny Gentry added three hits, and Turhan Folse allowed five hits and three earned runs in seven innings to earn the victory for the Sea Warriors (12-9).

Nick Czekaj hit a two-run homer for the Owls (4-11).

On Saturday, David Chow scattered eight hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter as HPU completed a sweep of a doubleheader with a 4-0 victory.

In the first game, Omalza's three-run homer sparked a five-run first inning that propelled HPU to a 12-9 victory.

WAIPAHU WINS AJA

Kramer Aoki and Syd Kinimaka hit two-run homers, and Sean Yamashita pitched 3 2/3 innings of effective relief as Waipahu defeated Wai'alae, 6-5, in the championship game of the O'ahu AJA Tournament yesterday at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Yamashita relieved starter Blane Muraoka with two runs in and the bases loaded and one out in the sixth. An error and sacrifice fly allowed Wai'alae to close to 6-5, but Yamashita escaped further trouble and allowed just one hit while striking out five to earn the save.

A.D. Mols homered for Wai'alae.

Waipahu will represent O'ahu in the Hawai'i State AJA Tournament in Hilo, April 7 and 8.
