TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Raines," 9:01 p.m., NBC. Last week's opener was smart and stylish, but left people confused about the concept. This is not a "Ghost Whisperer" or "Medium" or supernatural tale. Raines (Jeff Goldblum) is a troubled cop who imagines he's talking to the victims; the victims can only tell him things he already knows. That is spelled out much more clearly tonight. At first, the victim has no name or face. As people learn more things about him — some of them false — his image and his attitude change. There's room for humor here, neatly played by Goldblum.

OF LOCAL NOTE

"Memories of Hawaii Five-O," 9 p.m., KHON-2, repeats 3:30 p.m. Saturday. This 1996 TV documentary (included in the just-released "Five-O" first-season DVD release) was produced and hosted by Emme Tomimbang. James "Danno" MacArthur co-hosts the show, which includes rare interviews with Rose Freeman, widow of "Five-O" creator Leonard Freeman, and the late Marie Lord, wife of series star Jack Lord. "Memories" has been updated with footage of the recent "Five-O" DVD launch at the Ilikai hotel.

TONIGHT'S ODDITY

"October Road," 9:01 p.m., ABC. Last week's opener seemed promising, with an author returning to his hometown after a decade, learning he probably has a son. That start is squandered tonight, when the guy keeps doing and saying things that make the character ridiculous. The saving grace is Laura Prepon's strong portrayal of his ex-girlfriend.

OF NOTE

"My Name is Earl," 7 p.m., NBC. A funny two-parter is rerun, providing an international adventure. It's Earl's fault that Catalina got deported, so now he and Randy must retrieve her. Earl confronts some cruel characters (John Leguizamo guests) and his fear of flying. The funniest scenes are at the airport and on the plane.

"Ugly Betty," 7 p.m., ABC. Betty pretends to be Marc's girlfriend when his mom (Patti LuPone) comes to visit.

"Life Support" (2007), 5:30 p.m., HBO. Nelson George, a gifted writer-director, created this portrayal of his sister, an AIDS activist who has long been HIV-positive. The film has such a slice-of-life approach that it doesn't really seem to have a beginning or middle. Still, it's propelled by a superb performance by Queen Latifah.

"Grey's Anatomy," 8 p.m., ABC. This reruns a strong episode in which Burke's troubles were growing as he tried to conceal his hand tremors. Cristina is feeling guilty about the coverup. George senses trouble and has called in another doctor — Burke's old rival, no less — for his father's case.

"Andy Barker, P.I.," 8:31 p.m., NBC. Andy's pal pays no attention to calories or cholesterol, then dies on the golf course. Still, people feel there was foul play and insist the guy was a classic ladies' man. A moderately interesting story unfolds.
