Makaha Sons brings friends to the 'Country'

DIS 'N' DATA: When The Makaha Sons present their "Take a Walk in the Country Concert 6" at the Waikiki Shell June 16, there'll be a lot more of Louis "Moon" Kauakahi, John Koko and Jerome Koko — a pair of sets, from 7 to 8 p.m. and from 8:20 to 9:20 p.m. Keali'i Reichel will be a guest performer. Gaylord Holomalia has taped previous "Country" shows, according to John Koko, so anticipate DVDs along the lines of the trio's live-at-the-Hawai'i Theatre release. The group is traveling on the Mainland now, so details are forthcoming. ...

The Makaha Sons also headline the New Traditionalists Hana Hou concert, 8 p.m. April 27 at the Hawai'i Theatre. And log Dec. 15 on your holiday calendar — that's when they do a Christmas concert, site to be announced. ...

AS FOR REICHEL, HE'S ENJOYING A SKIING HOLIDAY. ...

TRAVEL LOG: Hapa — that's Barry Flanagan and Nathan Aweau — recently toured three Japan cities and have eight shows in California — including a sold-out Great American Music Hall show in San Francisco, with Charles Ka'upu chanting and Pi'ilani Klein doing hula. They'll nosh on dim sum at Yank Sing, joined by Hoku Zuttermeister, who'll be there for Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu's ho'ike in Oakland. Hapa will be back home to perform Saturday at Chai's Island Bistro, then hit the road again for shows in D.C., Boston, New York, Boulder, Eugene, Portland and Seattle. An April 21 stop at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center is set. ...

Peter Rockford Espiritu of the Tau Dance Theatre was on an Education through Cultural and Historical Organizations tour with principals Kamakoa Page of Hawai'i and Steven Blanchet of the Yu'pik Alaskan Eskimo organization, plus the musical group Pamyua and Jonathan Perry from the Wampanoag Tribe of Martha's Vineyard. They earned standing ovations in Washington, D.C., and New York City. In the Big Apple, Espiritu met Andrew Asnes, an alumnus of the Paul Taylor dance company, now a producer of the Broadway musical "The Color Purple," based on the movie. Oprah Winfrey is producing the show, which "American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino joins starting April 10. On the subway, Espiritu bumped into Melanie Tojio Lockyer; and at the New York City Ballet, met ex-Mauians John Mario-Sevilla (now the company's director of outreach programming) and Likolani Brown. ...

WHEE, THE PEOPLE: NFL legend and San Francisco 49er Joe Montana and family dined at Huggo's in Kona recently. They had sashimi, blackened mahimahi, spiny lobster tails and tomato and onion salad — the impromptu "entertainment" came from manta rays dancing in the surf. ...

Makana takes the Chai's Island Bistro spotlight from 7 to 9 p.m. today — and again March 29. ...

Kit Samson and Alfredo Romero will fill in for Augie Rey Saturday at the Elks Club. ...

RANDOM NOTES: Craig Miller, national president and CEO of Orlando-based Ruth's Chris Steak House, has had a whirlwind visit. His newest restaurant opens tonight in the Waikiki Beach Walk project; Danny Kaleikini delivers the blessing. Miller did the Ruth's Chris tour: He flew to the Big Island to check out Ruth's Chris at The Shops at Mauna Lani; lunched with Gail Ann Chew, Hawai'i Restaurant Association executive director, at the Yard House; and dined at the Restaurant Row Ruth's with franchisee Randy Schoch of Desert Island Restaurants. ...

Local theater veteran Yvonne Iversen Filius has relocated to Austin with her daughter Lauren, 16. The teen was visiting dad Bob of Oceanic Cable, and had fried ice cream at Compadres while dad was in a meeting with Andrew Meader to discuss the upcoming "Altar Boyz,"playing at 8 p.m. April 18 to 20, 2 and 8 p.m. April 21 and 2 p.m. April 22 at the Hawai'i Theatre. Lauren had seen the show in Texas and labeled it "hilarious and lots of fun." ...
