Kailua right-hander Zach Akamine kept Kaimuki off-balance with his pinpoint control, and the host Surfriders used a balanced offense in a 12-1 rout yesterday.

Akamine allowed three hits, walked none and struck out eight in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division opener for both teams.

"Just have fun, let my defense do all the work and throw strikes," said Akamine, a 5-foot-10 senior.

Akamine threw 52 strikes among his 69 pitches, and the run he allowed in the fourth was unearned. The game ended after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Akamine said his fastball and curve were working for him.

"He got his pitches in the right location and kept us off-balance," Kaimuki coach Duke Chinen said.

The Surfriders pounded out 15 hits, and every starter had at least one run or one RBI. Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit.

Akamine went 3 for 4 with a run, Kale Sumner batted 2 for 2 with a walk, triple and three runs, and Jared Iha was 2 for 3 with two runs.

Kenny Ellis and Keenan Tanaka (2 for 3) each had two RBIs.

"We've been working a lot on our hitting, and hopefully they're starting to understand and starting to buy into the system of how we hit here," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said.

The Surfriders also drew three walks and stole five bases.

In the second, Iha stole third with two outs and easily stole home on the next pitch as Kaimuki starter Masashi Kimura went to the windup.

The only run allowed by Akamine was in the fourth. Kimura led off with a ground double just fair down the left-field line. Kimura advanced to third when Akamine's pickoff attempt hit him in the helmet and rolled into center. After a strikeout, Kimura scored when Brandon Hess reached on a fielding error by the third baseman with the infield drawn in.

"We made a couple of errors out there and we still have a lot of room for improvement," Ishigo said. "We're not satisfied where we're at right now. It's only our first game of the season and we're trying to put together pieces of the puzzle and hopefully we're on our way."

Akamine didn't go to a three-ball count on any batter and finished strong by striking out the side in the top of the fifth.

"He had a good preseason. Today he came out and threw strikes and let our defense have a chance to play," Ishigo said.

Kailua scored two in the first, one in the second, two in the third and seven in the fourth, when it sent 11 batters to the plate and collected six hits.

Kekoa Lee tossed a five-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks to lead host Na Menehune.

Lee drove in four runs with a pair of doubles and Jordan Monico hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to put the 10-run mercy rule into effect.
