It took Roosevelt 25 minutes to finally assert its in-your-face, up-tempo style last night against Farrington.

Once the Rough Riders did, there was no slowing them down.

Roosevelt went on a 21-7 run over the final seven minutes to beat Farrington, 52-45, last night in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East Division game.

"We went to a smaller lineup, picked up full-court defense and put on a little more pressure," Roosevelt coach Bobby Keanini said.

The Rough Riders (2-0) hit 4 of 8 shots, including 2 of 3 3-point attempts, in the fourth period. They also made 11 of 12 free-throw attempts in the final 4:50.

"We had a lot of composure," said Roosevelt guard Dianna Zane, who scored all seven of her fourth-quarter points from the line. "We listened to coach Bob and did what he wanted us to do."

Tiana Sugui put back her own miss to tie it at 40 with 4:27 remaining, and Iwalani Rodrigues put the Rough Riders ahead with a 3-pointer from the left wing off an assist from Zane with 3:33 left.

"I like to pass and find whoever's open," Zane said.

Sugui scored 13 points, Zane had 11 points and six assists, and Rodrigues added 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Farrington (1-2) went on a 16-2 run over an eight-minute span of the second half to take a 38-31 lead 41 seconds into the fourth period. Valerie Lesu had seven points and Elaine Leaupepe had a 3-pointer and two assists during the surge.

The Governors did a nice job spreading the court against a man-to-man defense, getting the ball to the high post and hitting cutters.

"They're starting to understand their positioning and spacing," Farrington coach Jenic Tumaneng said. "Once these girls learn our system, we'll be all right."

In the third period, Farrington hit six of its first eight shots. Meanwhile, Roosevelt was 1 of 8 from the field and 2 of 6 from the line in the third.

"Farrington showed a lot of patience, taking us out of our fast-tempo game," Keanini said. "The game was really slow and we're not used to that."

He added his team struggled in the third because his post players struggled to defend on the perimeter. And that led to the smaller lineup (only one player taller than 5 feet 5).

Roosevelt finished 15 of 39 from the field, and Farrington was 18 of 44. The Rough Riders, however, hit 6 of 14 3-point-attempts and 16 of 22 from the line. The Governors were 2 of 6 on 3-pointers and 7 of 10 on free throws.
