New and vintage amusements out tomorrow on DVD:
"Music and Lyrics" (PG-13). Hugh Grant plays Alex Fletcher, one-half of a pop group of '80s fame (think Wham! — now think of the one who wasn't George Michael, and you've got your character template).
He is asked to write a song for a pop tartlet, and if it's a hit, it could get him back in the big time — but he has only four days to do it. Drew Barrymore is Sophie, the woman watering his plants. Circumstances lead to her become his lyricist. They bicker. They sing. They fall for each other. It's a light, fluffy romantic comedy that relies heavily on the charm of Grant and Barrymore.
Bonus features include additional scenes, a gag reel and a very funny music video.
"Dirty Dancing 20th Anniversary Edition" (PG-13). Nobody puts Baby in the corner, and you won't put this release of the pop-culture classic there either.
It features the new interview "Dirty Dancing With Patrick Swayze" (the first time he has participated on DVD), deleted and alternate scenes, screen tests, a tribute to Jerry Orbach and more.
"The Caine Mutiny: Collector's Edition" (unrated). A digitally remastered version of the film about mutiny aboard a naval vessel. It earned seven Oscar nominations and featured an all-star cast, including Fred MacMurray, Humphrey Bogart, Robert Francis and Jose Ferrer.
"Linda Linda Linda" (unrated). This Japanese movie depicts the musical and personal dramas of an all-girl high school rock band: guitarist Kei (Yu Kashii), drummer Kyoko (Aki Maeda) and bassist Nozomi (Shiori Sekine).
"Violette and "Comedy of Power" (both unrated). Two fine Claude Chabrol films starring his frequent collaborator Isabelle Huppert make their DVD debuts.
"Violette," from 1978, was their first project together. "Comedy of Power," from 2006, shows that time has not eroded their skills.
"Celebration of Gospel: Taking You Higher!" This concert premiered on BET in January and features performances by some of the biggest names in gospel and mainstream music, including Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, Fantasia, Shirley Caesar, Fred Hammond and more.
