Carll wins Hall of Fame golf

Turtle Bay's Kevin Carll won the Hawaiian Telcom Hall of Fame Championship on his 32nd birthday Monday. The Aloha Section PGA's second major of the year was held at Kapalua's Plantation Course.
Carll shot 1-over-par 74 in the final round. His 36-hole total of 148 was a shot better than Brendan Moynahan, of Hualalai Resort, who closed with a 73. Tied for third were first-round leaders Jerry King (78) and Matt Pakkala (78), at 150.
Hawai'i Golf Hall of Famer Larry Stubblefield won the Seniors at 72—150, with Makena's Dugal Milne second, two back. Ron Castillo (78—157), another Hall of Famer, successfully defended his Super Senior title, with Kerry Greenwood second.
The field of 54 played for a purse of $20,800. Carll won $2,500, a roundtrip ticket from Delta Air Lines and points towards Governor's Cup selection and Section Player of the Year.
SURFING
HAWAI'I FIVE ADVANCE
Five Hawai'i surfers advanced in the winners bracket of the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Junior Championships.
The third day of the nine-day event was completed yesterday in 2-foot waves at Caparica Beach, Portugal.
In the Boys 18 division, Tonino Benson of the Big Island and Kai Barger of Maui advanced to the fourth round of the winners bracket. Benson was one of the standouts of the day, receiving a two-wave score of 14.83.
Kekoa Cazimero and Granger Larsen lost in the third round and dropped to the consolation bracket.
In the Girls 18 division, Alana Blanchard, Monica Byrne-Wickey and Alessa Quizon advanced to the third round of the winners bracket. Leila Hurst lost in the second round, and dropped to the consolation bracket.
In the Boys 16 division, Keanu Asing, Albee Layer and Dylan Goodale lost in the third round to drop to the consolation bracket.
The contest follows a double-elimination format, so surfers from the consolation bracket can still rally to win an individual championship.
TENNIS
LAM WINS, LOSES
After winning his first professional title Saturday, Honolulu's Chris Lam captured his opening-round singles match yesterday at the $10,000 Garber Automall Pro Classic in Orange Park, Fla.
Lam defeated France's Martin Fabrice, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. He will play Australian Carsten Ball in the second round. Ball upset second-seeded Ryler De Heart in the opening round.
After winning last week at Vero Beach, Fla., third-seeded Lam and De Heart suffered a first-round doubles upset at the hands of Australians Colin Ebelthite and Clinton Thomson yesterday, 6-3. 2-6. 7-5. Punahou graduate Ikaika Jobe won his opening round doubles with partner Monte Tucker, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, over Adam Kennedy and Jonathan Schneider.
SEASIDERS HONORED
Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Yuliya Ustyuzhanina received the NCAA II National Senior of the Year Award last night at the kickoff banquet for the national tournament.
Ustyuzhanina also earned the West Region Senior of the Year Award while teammate Dori Magas earned the national and regional Player to Watch Awards.
Other awards won by Seasiders were Maggie Deng as West Region Rookie of the Year, David Porter as West Region Coach of the Year and Junyoung Kim as the men's West Region Senior of the Year.
KAPALUA EVENT SET
The 26th annual Kapalua Junior Vet/Senior Championships will be this weekend at The Tennis Garden at Kapalua Resort. Players between the ages of 40 and 70 are eligible.
Matches begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, with all finals Sunday.
Participants get a dinner party at the Hale Hokulani and a Kapalua Resort Tennis tournament T-shirt. Entry fees are $45 for one event and $55 for two.

WILLOUGHBY'S TEAM FALLS
Former Rainbow Wahine All-American Kim Willoughby, the 2004 national player of the year, had a match-high 29 points but her Caguas team fell in the final of the Puerto Rican Women's Superior League finals.
Juncos won the title, 25-19, 25-21, 14-25, 23-25, 18-16, over Caguas in the decisive match of the best-of-seven final series played before a record crowd of 9,068 in Ponce.
BOXING
FUNDRAISER AT PALOLO
A fundraiser for the Hawai'i boxing team competing at the U.S. Championships is scheduled for Saturday at Palolo District Park.
Bouts featuring boxers from O'ahu, Maui, Kaua'i and the Big Island will start at 6:30 p.m., according to Hawai'i team regional coordinator Bruce Kawano. Admission is $10.
The U.S. Championships are May 30 to June 9 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The top eight boxers of this tournament will compete in the Olympic Trials in August.
