UH women in third place at WAC track

Novelle Murray finished third in the discus and Jessica Trujillo qualified for the NCAA regional meet yesterday at the third day of the Western Athletic Conference track and field championships at Fresno, Calif.
Murray tossed the discus 46 feet, 9 1/2 inches, a personal best.
Trujillo was sixth in the pole vault (12-5 1/2) and became the seventh Rainbow Wahine to qualify for regionals.
Hawai'i is in third place with 36 points heading into today's final day of competition.
Idaho leads the women's competition with 73 points. Nevada is second with 49.
GOLF
UH WOMEN IN 14TH PLACE AT REGIONALS
University of Hawai'i golfer Xyra Suyetsugu shot a second consecutive 76 to stand at 152 and in a tie for 37th place after the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's West Regional at St. George, Utah, yesterday.
Dale Gammie shot a 74 and is at 153, tied for 43rd. Other UH golfers are Corie Hou (154); Nanch Shon (160) and Lisa Kajihara (166).
Mari Chun, a Kamehameha Schools alum playing for Stanford, shot a 72 and is tied for fifth with Kaua'i High alum Lehua Wise (New Mexico State), who also shot 72 at 145. Kelly Nakashima, a Baldwin alum playing for Idaho, shot a 73 and is tied for 14th at 147.
Pernilla Lindberg of Oklahoma State leads the tournament after shooting consecutive 68s. She has a five-shot lead over Misun Cho of Pepperdine, who is at 141.
UH shot a 306 yesterday and moved up from 15th to 14th with a 619 total.
Oklahoma State leads the regional at 581, followed by Stanford (587) and Arizona State (590).
SURFING
HAWAI'I IN THIRD PLACE IN JUNIOR WORLDS
Hawai'i is in third place in the team standings with two days remaining at the International Surfing Association World Junior Championships.
The sixth day of competition was completed yesterday in 1- to 2-foot waves at Caparica Beach, Portugal.
Five Hawai'i surfers are still in contention for individual titles. Tonino Benson of the Big Island remained in the winners bracket of the Boys 18 division by advancing through the fifth round. Also in the Boys 18 division, Kai Barger of Maui advanced through the sixth round of the consolation bracket.
In the Boys 16 division, Albee Layer of Maui and Dylan Goodale of Kaua'i advanced through the fourth and fifth rounds of the consolation bracket.
The contest follows a double-elimination format, so surfers in the consolation bracket can still rally to win the division.
In the Girls 18 division, Alessa Quizon of Wai'anae remained in the winners bracket by advancing through the fourth round.
Seven Hawai'i surfers were eliminated yesterday: Kekoa Cazimero and Granger Larsen in the Boys 18 division; Keanu Asing and Tanner Hendrickson in the Boys 16 division; Alana Blanchard, Monica Byrne-Wickey and Leila Hurst in the Girls 18 division.
Hurst won three consolation heats yesterday before losing in the sixth round.
Australia is in first place in the team standings, and Brazil is in second. Hawai'i is recognized as its own nation for the contest.
A separate United States team is in sixth place.
SOFTBALL
UH-HILO ADVANCES; HPU ELIMINATED
The University of Hawai'i-Hilo beat Seattle University, 3-2, yesterday to advance to the championship game of the NCAA West Regional in Turlock, Calif. Leo Sing Chow's two-run single in the 10th inning lifted the Vulcans (42-11) into the championship game today against UC San Diego or Cal State Stanislaus.
Also yesterday, Hawai'i Pacific lost to Humboldt State, 3-2, and was eliminated from the tournament.
FOOTBALL
EX-UH RECEIVER MOCK SIGNS WITH B.C. LIONS
Chad Mock, a former University of Hawai'i receiver, signed a free-agent contract with the B.C. Lions of the Canadian Football League, according to scouting coordinator Jon Nielsen.
Nielsen said Mock signed a standard two-year contract, with the second year being an option.
Nielsen also said the Lions are negotiating with former UH wideout Ian Sample.
