Chun qualifies for NCAA tourney

Kamehameha Schools alum Mari Chun of Stanford shot a 2-under-par 69 yesterday to finish tied for third at the NCAA Division Women's Golf West Regional at the Entrada at Snow Canyon in St. George, Utah.

Oklahoma State — led by medalist Pernilla Lindberg — and Stanford finished tied for first at 22-over 874 in the 21-team regional. Hawai'i finished 14th, shooting a 33-over 317 for a 936 in its first regional. The top eight teams plus the two top golfers not on those eight teams from each of the three regionals advance to the NCAA Championship.

Lindberg shot a 1-under 70 and finished at 7-over 206, seven strokes ahead of Anna Nordqvist of Arizona State (67). Chun and Rachel Newren (69) of Brigham Young were at 214.

Baldwin alum Kelly Nakashima of Idaho also qualified for the NCAA tournament. She shot a 75 and was tied for 15th at 222. Kaua'i High alum Lehua Wise of New Mexico State shot a 78 and finished tied for 17th at 223.

Dale Gammie (77) and Xyra Suyetsugu (78) led the Rainbow Wahine, finishing in a tie for 48th at 230. Other UH golfers were Corie Hou (80—234, tied for 58th), Nancy Shon (82—242, T80) and Lisa Kajiwara 28—248, T90).

At the Central Regional, Waiakea alum Amanda Wilson of Arizona shot a 2-over 73 and finished at 11-over 224, tied for 18th place at the University of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor. Arizona finished fifth to advance to the NCAA Championship, May 22 to 25 at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
