A 27-year-old man from Oakland, Calif., was pronounced dead yesterday after Fire Department divers recovered his body from the pool at Waimea Falls.
HFD spokesman Capt. Robert Main said Rescue 1 scuba divers recovered the body at 12:54 p.m. from a depth of 26 feet. Emergency Medical Services personnel at the scene made the pronouncement at 1:08 p.m., according to EMS spokesman Bryan Cheplic.
A fire company from Sunset Beach responded to the 11:10 a.m. call for assistance but did not have scuba equipment, Main said.
LANIKAI AFFECTED BY MAIN BREAK
Honolulu Board of Water Supply crews last night were repairing a broken water main near the entrance to Lanikai yesterday, and hoped to have the road cleared by this morning.
The break in the 12-inch main occurred at 751 Aalapapa Drive about 4 p.m., sending foot-deep water flowing across nearby Mokulua Drive. Traffic moved slowly through the area, and police were on hand to monitor the situation.
BWS spokeswoman Tracy Burgo said crews were replacing a five-foot section of pipe. Twenty homes were without water last night, and a water wagon was set up at 805 Aalapapa Drive.
The Board of Water Supply is scheduled to begin permanent replacement of water mains in the Lanikai area next month, Burgo said.
HALE'IWA SERVICE FOR HALL SUNDAY
Adventure filmmaker Jimmy Hall's ashes will be scattered at sea off Hale'iwa Sunday in a not-so-traditional manner.
Some of Hall's ashes will be taken out by boat while paragliders jumping into the water will also be carrying ashes with them, according to Hall's agent, Micah Johnson.
A memorial service for the North Shore businessman and filmmaker will be held at Hale'iwa's Ali'i Beach Park from 9 to 11 a.m.
Hall was killed May 9 while skydiving off a mountain or glacier on Baffin Island in northeastern Canada, north of the Arctic Circle.
