A big shot of confidence and a big load off its shoulders carried the Moloka'i High School girls volleyball team.
Moloka'i defeated fourth-seeded Farrington, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16, in the quarterfinals of the New City Nissan/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division II Girls Volleyball Championships at Radford last night.
The Farmers (12-2), the Maui Interscholastic League runner-up, will face top-seeded Hawai'i Baptist (15-4) in tonight's semifinal at Radford at 7:30.
Kelsy Takashima finished with 14 kills behind an unstoppable cross-court shot and Kalei Adolpho and Vaoia Seumalo added nine each for Moloka'i.
"A big part was my teammates who stepped it up so it was hard for Farrington to key on one person," Takashima said.
Moloka'i coach Matt Helm said Wednesday's first-round win over Honoka'a gave his team a boost and eased some pressure.
"Last night was a big load off of our shoulders," Helm said. "Getting through last night, (it took) a lot of the pressure off us. We came out with a lot of confidence tonight."
Tied at 7 in the third game, the Farmers went on a 5-0 run behind a Takashima block and kill, and an Adolpho block.
Moloka'i called a timeout after Farrington closed to 16-14. Moloka'i's Ku'ulei Keliikuli-Peters had a kill following the timeout before the Governors fell apart. Following a service error by the Farmers, the Governors committed three errors to fall behind 20-15.
After Farrington setter Brandy Vergado-Duclayan got a sideout on a dump shot, Moloka'i closed out the win on a 5-0 run.
"We've been working hard to make it to states and now that we're here, we're taking care of business," Seumalo said. "We decided to play up to our potential."
Game 2 was tied eight times, the last at 20-20. Valerie Lesu then served back-to-back aces for Farrington and Moloka'i was called for a lift for a 23-20 Farrington lead.
Moloka'i closed to 24-23 on a block by Danna Lynn Hooper-Juario, but Ke'ui Remigio's kill ended the game.
Remigio led Farrington (12-5), the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Division II champion, with eight kills.
"It kind of gave them some confidence and got some of the first-game jitters out," Farrington coach Reagan Agena said of the second-game win.
Adolpho, Moloka'i's 6-foot freshman middle blocker, left after the match to catch a flight to Maui for today's state cross country championships. She finished fifth at the MIL championship.
HBA DEF. WAIMEA
Top-seeded Hawai'i Baptist made quick work of Waimea to advance to the semifinals.
The Eagles (15-4) defeated the Menehunes, 25-14, 25-10, at Radford.
Waimea (8-3), the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion, will face Farrington (12-5) in a consolation match.
"We prepared really well heading up to the last week and a half," Hawai'i Baptist coach Myles Shioji said. "We knew they would be really tough. We didn't want to leave anything to chance and we took care of business."
Said Waimea coach Chad Delanoza: "They controlled the ball really well, controlled the net. We couldn't pass, we couldn't get our offense running."
Moloka'i defeated Hawai'i Baptist in a preseason match earlier this year.
"Both teams got better and I think it will be a good competition," said Hawai'i Baptist's Sarah Palmer, who led all players with nine kills.
