Heard a preschooler sing the blues before?

By Treena Shapiro

I meant to recharge my Creative Zen after my 4-year-old daughter ran it down watching "Shaun the Sheep" and listening to her dance party mix.

Instead, the kids were treated to several days of mommy's "Life Sucks But Let's Sing About It" music.

As a result, my daughter has a new favorite song: "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter.

Imagine a dimply preschooler belting out: "You had a bad day. You're taking one down. You sing a sad song just to turn it around."

Is it pathetic? Funny? Positive?

The other day, a friend asked me what a 4-year-old knows about having a bad day anyway. We pondered it for a half-second, then agreed that 4-year-olds know everything about bad days.

Think you're having a bad day? Try hanging out with my daughter when she's missed her nap.

I'm not saying that adults can't be just as melodramatic as children, but the older we get, the easier it is to resist the urge to crawl under the covers just because someone asks you to be quiet or throw yourself on the floor because someone says "wait a minute."

It all got me thinking about the things that ruin her day:

  • Picking her up from preschool before she gets her ice pop or hand stamp.

  • Turning the light off at night or turning it on in the morning.

  • Asking her to wait five minutes for a glass of milk or not eat an entire bunch of bananas in one sitting.

  • Refusing to eat the finger-bruised banana she's offering.

  • Telling her she's not a princess. (She took this one really hard.)
