North Shore earns berth in title game

Shintaro Yoshida scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth as the North Shore Honu beat the Waikiki BeachBoys, 8-7, last night

The victory allowed the Honu (20-8) to clinch a berth in the league championship game.

Elsewhere, Takumi Kobe had two hits and four RBIs as Honolulu beat West Oahu, 9-3, at Wong Stadium in Hilo.


SURFING

ISLE SURFERS FALL

Hawai'i surfers Bruce Irons, Fred Patacchia Jr. and Pancho Sullivan lost their first-round heats in the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro yesterday at Imbituba, Brazil.

All three will have to compete in the second round, where eliminations begin.

Elsewhere, Australia's Stephanie Gilmore won the Mancora Peru Classic women's event at Mancora, Peru.

Gilmore defeated defending world champion Layne Beachley of Australia in the final.


SOFTBALL

TAMURA NAMED COACH

Randall Tamura has been named Kamehameha Schools softball coach, succeeding Ty Sing Chow, who coached the varsity team from 2001 to '07.

Tamura, who served as Sing Chow's assistant, also has coached at Punahou and Saint Francis.

DIVISION II NEWS

Brigham Young-Hawai'i, led by Golden Harper's 13th-place finish, placed ninth in the NCAA Division II West Regional Cross Country Men's Championships yesterday at Boise, Idaho. Hawai'i Pacific placed 12th, Hawai'i-Hilo 15th and Chaminade 18th. BYUH, led by Amanda Whitford's 30th-place finish, placed 17th in the women's championships. HPU was 20th, Hilo 21st and Chaminade 23rd. ... Megan Pachecano scored on a breakaway in the eighth minute and Hilo, with goalie Randi Walters making eight saves, played spoiler in denying Dixie State, 1-0, in a Pacific West Conference women's soccer game at Kea'au. Had Dixie (9-2-1) won, it would have captured the PacWest title. Instead, the title goes to BYUH (10-2). ... Hillary Hurley had 16 kills and Laura Rodriguez added 19 digs as Hilo (22-5, 13-0) beat HPU (10-14, 4-8), 30-26, 30-28, 30-22, in a PacWest volleyball match at the UHH gym. Antje Buskies had 11 kills for HPU. ... Samantha Miller and Evelyn Bluthenthal each had 15 kills as Chaminade (14-6, 7-5) beat BYUH (12-9, 8-5), 30-18, 28-30, 19-30, 32-30, 16-14, in a PacWest match at McCabe Gym. Noelle Filimoeatu had 20 kills and 21 digs for BYUH.
